Remarks :
To get admission in the B.Tech programme of IIT Guwahati, students first need to clear JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced. Students should also have a percentage greater than 75% in their 12th Board exams. The application form can be found at the official NTA website for JEE Main and the form for JEE Advanced becomes available for the student after he clears JEE Main on the website of the IIT conducting the examination for the ongoing year. The admission process was not much troublesome but I wished the official documents required for the education process were announced a little beforehand to avoid hassle at the time of counselling.
Course Curriculum Overview :
I chose the course of Mechanical Engineering since it sparked my interest and IIT Guwahati has got a good NIRF ranking of 7. Also, the campus of IIT Guwahati is called the most beautiful campus in India. The faculty-to-student ratio is nearly 1:60. The faculty members are highly qualified, and many of them have completed their PhDs from revered foreign institutions. The teaching method is also appreciable. After every 3 to 4 classes of lectures, a tutorial class is held where students are given a set of questions related to the topics taught and their doubts are addressed. Also during the lecture classes, teachers ask the students to get a good hold of the concepts before moving to further topics. There are two quizzes and two exams held in one semester and the semester length is about 4 months. To pass is not difficult but students have to maintain a good CPI and that requires hard work.
Internships Opportunities :
There are many companies coming to campus for internships like RedBull, J.P. Morgan, etc. Roles like business analyst, finance analyst and software developer roles are given to students who are offered internships. Students have to build a good resume before their 3rd year starts to get an offer of an internship. Participating in inter-hostel and Inter-IIT events and holding positions of responsibility also creates a good mark on the resume.
Placement Experience :
Students are offered internships in their third year and placements in their fourth year. However, internship opportunities come to students with skills of other years too. Many big companies have come for placements so far like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Wipro, Bajaj, etc. Last year highest international package offered was 2.4 cr annually to a CSE student and in the mechanical branch, it was 51 lakhs. Mechanical branch had a placement percentage of 87 last year.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
The fees is high including the tuition, hostel, medical and all other kinds of fees. In four years, the total amount is nearly 1100000. Various scholarship programmes information come to our outlook mail for the less priviledged students and female students.
Campus Life :
The life in campus is all about fun and hardwork. There are many clubs including tech clubs, social service clubs, cultural clubs, sports clubs, etc.The annual fest held is called Alcheringa and it is held in the first week of February and the annual tech fest is Techniche and it is held in the first week of September. We have 3 storeyed central library in our campus with variety of books not only limited to engineering. The classrooms have a good design with projector and white wall on two sides for good visibilty for all students and the classrooms are all air-conditioned. The campus is full of sports and extra-curricular activities including a swimming pool. There are Inter-IIT competitions for which the students prepare with all their might to bring their college to the top. Students run all the clubs in the campus and have developed various apps which ease the life of campus junta. One example is the OneStop app developed by the students of IIT Guwahati.
Hostel Facilities :
The earlier batches used to get single rooms for all years and all programmes , but due to the bad condition of one of the hostels , the first and second year students have to adjust with one more student in a single room. The meal menu takes care of students' health and taste with two special meals in a week and the breakfasts have sprouts, eggs, fruits, bread and butter, milk, etc. in their list. It is compulsory for all students to live in hostel and there are many inter-hostel events held which brings oneness with the other hostel-mates.
