JIPMER: 14 Answered Questions

Do the doctors and residents working in famous hospitals like AIIMS, Manipal, CMC, JIPMER and other top medical colleges get their paycheck on time?

Sayantani Barman
Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

If you work in a central government-funded institution, you will definitely receive the paycheque on time that is the last working day of the month. However, the situation may not be the same in state government institutions where salaries are not received on time.

I have a few friends in Kasturba Medical College, AIIMS, and JIPMER and all of them told me that they receive their salary exactly on the last day of the month.

However, many other less-reputed hospitals and medical colleges, dont pay their residents and interns or they receive the paycheck extremely late. I believe in order to create a strong healthcare system, we must cater to basic necessities such as paying the healthcare workforce on time.

Are AIIMS, PGIMER, and JIPMER overrated?

Shridhar SriramanLives in Pondicherry, Puducherry, India

No, I don't think excellent medical colleges like AIIMS, PGIMER, and JIPMER are in any way overrated. They deserve the hype they receive. The patients consider JIPMER doctors as the human form of God. They trust them blindly and also respect them a lot.

Apart from the highly experienced and educated doctors, JIPMER has some amazing facilities. Most of the departments are well-established with highly qualified doctors. The best department of JIPMER is said to be Pediatrics with the best doctor pool.

As far as academics are concerned, the UG curriculum is well-organized. The students are taken to clinics regularly and are confident about their basic clinical skills. The best past us exposure to all sorts of cases from Male breast cancer to life-threatening emergencies and all kinds of surgeries and non-surgical cases. Recently JIPMER has started focusing on specialized surgeries in the Super Speciality departments.

The campus life is great and the hostel facilities are no less than 5-star hotels. Students are allotted single rooms and the campus is green and beautiful.

Considering everything, facilities, education, and campus life I feel JIPMER is not overrated at all.

How difficult is the JIPMER exam when compared to the NEET & AIIMS?

Suman SharmaMBBS from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry (2021)

You will be surprised to know that the JIPMER exam is one of the easiest medical exams. The majority of the questions are easier than those asked in NEET. The ratio of the difficulty levels of JIPMER, NEET, and AIIMS is loosely 0.75:1:1.5.

The JIPMER syllabus is based on the Tamil Nadu state board syllabus , so it’s quite easy for CBSE students but the topics that are only a part of the Tamil Nadu state board need to be studied. The exam paper has 10 questions from the English language and 10 from logical reasoning.

However, the acceptance rate is extremely low at JIPMER due to the lesser number of seats. Unlike AIIMS, JIPMER does not have many branches. The main JIPMER is located in Puducherry while a new JIPMER came up in Karaikal. There are a total of 200 seats under JIPMER, 200 Seats in JIPMER Pondicherry & 50 seats in JIPMER Karaikal. Given the fact that around 1 lakh students appear for the exam every year, and only 200 get selected, the acceptance rate is as low as 0.15%.

Overall, the selection rates of the aforementioned institutes have been arranged below

AIIMS Delhi(~0.02%) > JIPMER Puducherry (~0.1%) > New AIIMS(0.5–1%)

How much prize money can I get if I got AIR 1 in the NEET, AIIMS, and JIPMER?

Tithi AggrawalLives in New Delhi

The official authorities don’t award any prize money to NEET toppers but the toppers are awarded cash prizes from their coaching institute. For instance, Allen Carrier Institute produced NEET 2022 toppers Tanishka. In the victory carnival of ALLEN, she received 21 Lakhs along with other toppers.

Additionally here is what will happen if you get AIR 1:

  • Your name will be included in the Limca Book of Records.
  • Every news channel will want to feature you making you a celebrity overnight.
  • All book brands pay for you for your testimony.
  • The coaching module's back cover will have your photos.

However, I feel one must value respect and humbleness more than the money you earn.

What are the pros and cons of doing an MBBS at JIPMER in Puducherry?

Manjil SharmaStudied MBBS from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry (2020)

Here are a few pros and cons of pursuing MBBS from JIPMER

Pros-

  • You will meet some highly experienced doctors who will be your professors too. You will be amazed by their nature, their dealing with patience, and their motivating nature. You will start respecting them from the bottom of your hearts.
  • You will be given the opportunity to take part in different procedures in neonatal resuscitation or the Pediatrics department. The residents are very helpful given that you are keen to learn.
  • Pondicherry is a safe place for both boys and girls. You will experience a unique kind of freedom here. Girls stay out till 9-9:30 pm alone and dont face any issues at all.
  • Pondicherry is a clean and pollution-free city that offers fresh breathable air.
  • You will be away from the hustle and bustle of city life and get to experience a slow life. You get a lot of time to ponder upon the challenges life throws at you.

Cons

  • North Indians might face language issues to a certain extent.
  • Pondicherry does not have online delivery services like Swiggy, Big Basket, and Food Panda.
  • There isn't any decent shopping place here. There is only Pothys which is only known for sarees and suits.
  • There is no good bookstore near the campus for fictional books.

Overall, studying at JIPMER is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that shouldn't be underestimated at any cost.

Which is better AIIMS or JIPMER?

Prerona Datta

Although both JIPMER and AIIMS are elite medical colleges in India, I believe AIIMS is slightly better than JIPMER. Here are some common differences that can be pointed out

  • JIPMER has a higher intake than AIIMS so the student-teacher ratio is also higher. This further results in a higher student-patient ratio when one patient is examined for a class.
  • AIIMS has a bigger hospital, more patient flow, and better equipment thereby enhancing the overall learning experience. In AIIMS students are left to study on their own and academics aren’t forced upon them while in JIPMER the teachers teach a lot of theory and practice.
  • AIIMS refers most general and simple cases to other hospitals so you won’t be able to see a variety of cases while in JIPMER, you see all types of cases.
  • AIIMS has better research facilities and funding so if you are willing to do research projects, AIIMS is better for you.
  • JIPMER offers extensive internships that teach a lot and provide hands-on experience and clinical practice. AIIMS clinical testing and internships aren’t that good.
  • Both JIPMER and AIIMS have a strong alumni network and reservations for post-graduation courses that give you ample opportunities for courses and jobs after finishing your studies.
  • Delhi being a metropolitan city has better recreational activities while Pondicherry is the best place if you want a peaceful and calm environment.
  • Pulse by AIIMS is the largest intercollegiate medical festival in the country while Spandan by JIPMER is probably the second largest. Pulse definitely has better cultural activities while Spandan definitely has better sporting ones.
  • AIIMS has better post-graduation and super specialty courses.

Overall, both are excellent institutes and if you even have a choice between AIIMS and JIPMER, then go for AIIMS.

What is the difficulty level of JIPMER MBBS entrance exam as compared to AIPMT? Which are the best reference books for JIPMER entrance exam?

Suman SharmaMBBS from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry (2021)

Honestly, there isn't much difference in the level of difficulty of the two papers i.e., NEET and JIPMER. Both the exams are based on NCERT although JIPMER occasionally includes questions out of NCERT Syllabus. JIPMER is relatively easy as most questions are small and simple unlike some complex ones included in NEET.

To prepare for the JIPMER exam all you need to do is go through the previous year's questions, revise your concepts, and formulas, name reactions of organic, and most importantly remain calm throughout preparing for the exam.

What is PG life like at JIPMER?

Namrata Das
Manjil SharmaStudied MBBS from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry (2020)

The PG life at JIPMER is extremely tiring and the clinical branches are hectic You will hardly get 4-5 hours of sleep a day but things will get better after 6 months. The academic environment is without doubt one of the best in the country with a healthy good senior-junior rapport. Students take their thesis work quite seriously.

The PGs hail from different corners of the country so you get to meet a highly diverse crowd with different levels of intellect and talents. many different types of people. Hard work is the common unifying factor among them.

Infrastructure in Jipmer has been constantly improved over the past few years and the hostel facilities are amazing. Decent food is served in the mess and students have 24/7 access to the internet. Some of the best PG departments of JIPMER are Medicine, OBG, Pediatrics, Anaesthesia, Dermat, Opthal, ENT, etc

Overall, PG life at JIPMER is quite challenging but the experience and the JIPMER tag are definitely worth it.

Here are some things you should know about JIPMER PG exam and related prep-

  1. Solve previous year question papers; they do play an important role.
  2. JIPMER paper has a good number of questions from previous AIIMS/NEET PG papers.
  3. The paper has a bit more concept oriented and problem-solving type questions than the NEET-PG paper, similar to the AIIMS exam. It will test how deeply you know the concepts.

  5. The JIPMER PG exam is quite difficult, so prepare well.
