Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Chemical Engineering) From IIT BHU, Varanasi

If you are interested in coding and aim to work in good corporate firms, then it is suggested that you go for CSE at NIT Calicut. But if you want an IIT tag, you can opt for IIT BHU. But this won't matter much afterward.

So, if you are focused on doing research then Chemical Engineering at IIT BHU will be a good option. You can also learn coding on the sidelines, which might be beneficial if you sit for placements.

The choice of studying in a college pursuing a particular subject is entirely up to you. Check where your strengths and weaknesses lie and then choose accordingly. Both institutes are good in their own way. But it is your hard work and dedication that will prove if CSE or Chemical will be good for you. 

If you are interested in a particular branch then go for that as IIT BHU and Kanpur both of these institutions are among the top institutions in India. Both the institutions are quite old, so they are up to the mark in the alumni network, placements, and internship, etc. But if you are not sure about the branch then consider the following points –

The department of Electronics Engineering at IIT BHU dates back to 1971 and equipped with good laboratory facilities. The faculties are well experienced. According to 2019 placement statistics, a total of 88 students got placed from Electronics Engineering. The average CTC offered at this IIT was around 8.19 lakhs/annum.

The department of Chemical Engineering in IIT Kanpur is considered among the best in the nation. If you are passionate about higher studies, research, or placement in government/ semi-government jobs (PSUs) then you can go for Chemical, but it has very few non-core placement opportunities. Chemical engineering provides more opportunities in higher studies and research. The average placement package offered at IIT Kanpur in 2019 was around 7.5 LPA.

Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) is a public engineering university, situated in Varanasi. The institute has tie-ups with the University of Cambridge (UK), University of Oxford (UK), University of Sheffield (UK). The institute has been ranked 10th and 11th in the categories engineering and overall by the NIRF rankings in 2019. 

Course Details

• The institute offers B.Tech in Mining Engineering as a full-time four-year course at a fee of Rs 8.62 Lakhs for the full period. 
• The course has 133 seats available at the institute.

Placements

• B.Tech in Chemical Engineering has a placement rate of approximately 75%. 
• Companies such as ITC, HUL, Reliance, and Honeywell are some of the top recruiters which visit the campus for the placement season. 
• The lowest salary offered is 8LPA, while the average salary offered is an impressive 12LPA. 
• The highest package offered at the institute is 37 LPA.

With various international tie-ups, the institute has enhanced its learning experience and placement facilities. Recruiters from Indian and foreign companies visit the campus for placements. With IIT being a renowned university students bag top-notch placement offers. The institute boasts of a very high 75% placement rate, which makes it a good choice for students interested in the course.

There are mixed reviews about the placements of the chemical department of IIT BHU and IIT

Roorkee. Students of IIT BHU thinks they have good placements than IIT-R and vice-versa. A

senior professor of Chemical Department T IIT Roorkee, who is an alumnus of IIT BHU, visited the campus of IIT BHU last year. According to him, students at both of the institutes believe that grass is greener on the other side. The fact is placements in both the departments are almost equal.

Following are some of the examples for the same:

1. ITC, which offers 18L CTC, visited IIT-R and not IIT BHU, while HUL (Hindustan Unilever Limited), offering 22L CTC, visited IIT BHU, but not IIT Roorkee.

2. Core companies for Chemical Engineering like Aditya Birla, Reliance visits both the campus.

Now coming to branch change, in IIT BHU, a maximum of 10 percent of students can move from one branch to another, while in IIT Roorkee, it’s only 2 percentage. So, in the case of branch change, IIT BHU is more liberal for change in the branch, i.e. if there are 120 students at IIT BHU chemical department, 12 students can move for branch change while in case of IIT-R in the strength of 120, approximately 3 students would be able to do the branch change.

The answer to this question depends on what you aim for after 4 or 5 years of your college degree. If you just want a placement and not particularly interested in a branch then you could go for any of those two branches as placement statistics are good for both in IIT BHU. There are enough opportunities in the non-core sector which generally comprise IT, developer, analytics, product management, business analyst, etc. These sectors don't look for a specific branch and rather require good communication and analytical skills. 

Coming to the core sectors, both civil and chemical provide diverse opportunities in these areas. If you are someone who finds chemical processing and chemistry interesting, then go for chemical engineering. If you are the one who gets amazed by the interesting and defying structures, civil engineering should be your choice. According to 2019 placement statistics, 77 students from Civil Engineering and 104 students from Chemical Engineering got placed from IIT BHU.

Opting for civil engineering would open doors to exams such as IES, UPSC, GATE, and other state engineering exams. There are ample opportunities for civil engineering majors. And if you choose chemical engineering, you can go for higher studies or work for PSUs. So, both these branches at IIT BHU would provide enough opportunities to grow and explore and the end decision should be based on your interest.
