First of all, it’s wrong to compare IIM Sambalpur with a below-average institution like IBS Hyderabad. IIM Sambalpur might be a new IIM but it is still among the tier 3 colleges whereas IBS Hyderabad is nowhere near.
My friend is currently pursuing an MBA from IIM Sambalpur and has listed the following pros and cons of the institute
Pros
Cons
All in all IIM Sambalpur is a decent choice if you are passionate about the IIM tag only and have limited options. Some years down the line it might improve in brand value as well. So go for it if it’s the tag you are after but go for ISB if you want a better teaching experience.
IIM Sambalpur is a new IIM and obviously lacks the credibility enjoyed by older IIMs. But it is not a very bad choice if you are just looking for a degree to add to your resume. Moreover, the IIM tag is bound to be helpful on one or the other day. In case you have limited options then forgoing IIM Sambalpur’s offer is not right. After all, it is an IIM and is still preferred over other B Schools by many corporations. The basic placement statistics below might help you get a deeper insight into the same
Highest CTC: INR 30 LPA
Average CTC: INR 12.64 LPA
Median CTC: INR 11.42 LPA
IIM Sambalpur will definitely not offer opportunities as good as other old IIMs but the IIM tag is tempting enough to grab the offer.
It is completely normal to have an interest in both finance and marketing, as they are both important and widely applicable areas of business. To explore your interest in finance, there are many short, introductory courses available on platforms like Udemy that can be completed at a relatively low cost, such as for no more than INR 500. Additionally, you can read basic finance books from any commerce background to gain a solid foundation in the subject. Similarly, for marketing, there are many courses available on platforms like Udemy, as well as other sites. However, it is worth considering that pursuing an MBA program with a fresh mind and an open outlook for many possibilities may be beneficial for gaining a comprehensive understanding of marketing.
In addition to gaining specialized knowledge in finance and marketing, it is also important to have a good understanding of MS Excel and Powerpoint. These skills are widely used in the business world and will be beneficial for any professional in any vertical or specialization.
The decision on whether or not to take a break and join an IIM depends on your current situation. If you feel that you are at a point where you are no longer making progress in your current role or are at risk of becoming stagnant, it may be beneficial to take a break and pursue an IIM degree. As you are still young, you have a long and promising career ahead of you.
Having a degree from any one of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) will open up a multitude of career opportunities and will be a valuable asset to you throughout your professional journey. An IIM degree is widely recognized as a premier business education and will give you the skills and knowledge to excel in a variety of roles and industries. Additionally, it will provide you with a network of accomplished professionals who will be valuable contacts throughout your career.
