Graduate study in UB's philosophy department prepares students for carrying out original research in philosophy and fields of applied philosophy, and trains students to be quality instructors. The department is distinguished by a range of special interests and orientations in philosophy, the high quality of instruction, and by the high degree of faculty-student interaction, both in scholarly enterprises and in departmental affairs.
The Department of Philosophy offers doctoral studies in most recognized subdisciplines and historical periods of philosophy. Our PhD program is designed to prepare students for teaching and for carrying out original research in the field.
The Department is distinguished by its unusually wide range of special interests and orientations in philosophy, and by the high degree of faculty-student interaction both in scholarly enterprises and in departmental affairs. We have nationally-recognized researchers in aesthetics, the history of philosophy, philosophy of language, and metaphysics.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Academic transcripts of all the undergraduate and graduate courses pursued
- Personal Statements
- Letters of recommendation from three persons who know your academic and research background
- GRE score is optional
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum 550 in PBT; minimum 213 in CBT; minimum 79 in IBT
- IELTS: minimum 6.5
