NEET Cut off 2023: Qualifying vs Admission Cut off

Candidates often get confused between the two kinds of cut offs in NEET exam. These are NEET Qualifying Marks and the NEET admission cut offs. The key differences between the two are enumerated below for easy understanding:

NEET Qualifying/ Passing Marks NEET Admission Cut off
It is released by the NTA along with the result Released by the MCC for 15% AIQ counselling and the respective state authorities for 85% State Quota counselling
It refers to the minimum score and percentile required to qualify NEET UG exam. It is the last rank at which admission is granted in the respective medical colleges.
NEET Cut off (qualifying) is released category-wise but not institute-wise. NEET Cut off for admissions is released both category-wise and institute-wise.
Admissions are not granted on the basis of the qualifying NEET Cut offs. It is only to shortlist the qualified candidates who are eligible to participate in NEET UG Counselling. Admissions are granted on the basis of the admission cut offs only.

Will NEET 2023 Cut off be high or low?

NEET Cut off 2023 is affected by a number of factors. On analyzing these factors, it will be easier to answer if NEET 2023 Cut off will be high or low. The factors that influence the fixing of NEET Cut off are given below:

  • Difficulty level of NEET UG 2023 exam: Based on the detailed analysis of NEET 2023 paper after the conclusion of the exam on May 7, it will be easier to predict if NEET Cut off 2023 will be lower or higher than last year. NEET paper 2021 was tougher than the 2020 exam, hence the 2021 NEET cut off was lower than 2020.
  • Number of test-takers: The number of test-takers this year is also expected to be more than 17 lakhs. Last year, 17,64,571 candidates appeared for the exam. With more number of candidates, it is not necessary that the cut off will be higher. In 2021, the number of test-takers was higher than 2020, but the cut off was lower. So, it has been observed that this factor does not play any significant role if considered individually.
  • Number of MBBS/ BDS seats available: The state-wise number of MBBS seats have been increased to 91, 927. With this, it is expected that the cut off score will decrease.
  • Category-wise distribution of NEET test-takers will play a major role in determing the category-wise NEET Cut off 2023.
  • NEET Cut off trends of previous years: The past year trends of NEET Cut off marks are tabulated below:
Category NEET Cut off Percentile NEET cut off 2020 NEET Cut off 2021 NEET Cut off 2022
UR 50th 720-147 720-138 715-117
SC 40th 146-113 137-108 116-93
OBC 40th 146-113 137-108 116-93
ST 40th 146-113 137-108 116-93
UR-PH 45th 146-129 137-122 116-105
OBC-PH 40th 128-113 121-108 104-93
SC-PH 40th 128-113 121-108 104-93
ST-PH 40th 128-113 121-108 104-93

NEET Percentile Calculation Method

The percentile can be calculated by the following method:

Suppose, you have scored Rank 50 in NEET and the total number of students who appeared are 6,00,000.

NEET percentile will be: [600000-50)/600000] X 100 = 99.99

You need to get 50 percentile for admission in Medical/Dental colleges.
