Mrs. G. T. Bharathy has been working as an Assistant Professor of the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department at Jerusalem College of Engineering, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She has done B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering, M.E. in Communication Systems and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of ECE, Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies under the eminent guidance of Dr. V.Rajendran who is the Director of Research, Professor, and an Rdt. NIOT Scientist. She is also a Member of IEEE and a lifetime member of ISTE. She has an amazing 20 years of teaching experience and published 2 patents, 10 Scopus Indexed papers, 2 papers in Web of Science, 3 Springer book chapters, and more than 36 papers in various other reputed National and International Journals. In addition to this, she has received the Best Teacher Award, and Best Paper Award and has conducted several workshops and webinars. Being associated with the education sector for so long, she has acted as Session Chair for International and National Conferences, National level Symposiums, reviewer for various IEEE conferences, and as a review board member for engineering themes in Medicon Open Access Journal.

Being a faculty of the ECE Department, what are your responsibilities towards the students?

"It is to teach students, organize events to upskill them and inculcate best ethical values in them"

As an Assistant Professor, my prime responsibility is to take regular classes, maintain discipline among students, inculcate ethical values in them, and teach them the respective subject in the best possible way. Motivating students to score good marks in internal assessments and end-semester examinations, monitoring their academic progress and performance, ensuring they participate in college co-curricular activities, guiding them whenever they get stuck somewhere, and organizing events like symposiums, conferences, etc. teaching them beyond books also comes under my scope of work.


How do you establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

"By guiding and counseling them whenever required and working with everyone as a team"

To ensure a cordial relationship with my students, I keep guiding and mentoring them concerning their academic and non-academic queries and issues. And I regularly engage my students in a wide variety of innovative activities like video presentations, Kahoot Quiz, technical sessions, crossword quizzes, etc. to make learning more fun and interactive for students. We also motivate students to present their papers in technical conferences, and seminars, take part in NPTEL courses, ask questions and express their views. And when it comes to fellow faculty, we all work as a team by being supportive of each other and encouraging each other to keep working with the same enthusiasm and passion.


How do you introduce a practical and industry-oriented approach toward subjects?

"Our college offer value-based courses to students and projects are assigned to them regularly"

We have introduced value-added along with integrated courses for the benefit of our students and to give them more options to explore their interests and passion. Along with this, industrial visits are conducted regularly and assignments and real-time projects are assigned to them by forming groups.


Which best practices are offered by your department to the students to help them gain the necessary skills?

"Quizzes, seminars, guest sessions, and workshops are conducted to educate students beyond books"

To enhance students' skills and knowledge, quizzes, technical sessions, seminars, workshops, and guest lectures are organized regularly in collaboration with industry experts of esteemed organizations and academicians of reputed institutions. Along with this, assignments and projects are assigned to them to assess them and help them implement their knowledge for the better cause. 


How do you strategize and redesign the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

"We regularly update it to include industry demands in the form of new courses and training programs"

Being an Autonomous institution, we do have the privilege to frame the curriculum and syllabus as per industry needs and developments. Therefore, while designing it, we include recent advancements and case studies in the relevant subjects, and also the topics related to the simulation of theoretical concepts are identified and included in the syllabus wherever applicable. In addition to this, Faculty Development Programs, and workshops like ATAL are organized and MOOC certification courses are provided to students to strengthen their knowledge of the latest technologies. Also, we update the curriculum every year in line with changing industry requirements and students' needs.


How does your college prepare students for placement and higher education?

"They are trained through rigorous and customized training programs and mock interviews"

Our college does have a dedicated Training and Placement Cell to train and prepare students for the actual interview process and industrial world. And this cell organizes Placement specific and personality development training and mock interviews for students. Apart from this, the Students Development Cell of our college also conducts numerous activities and events for them, and guest lectures are arranged as and when needed to enhance the industrial exposure of students. GATE questions are taught during classroom teaching and coaching for the GATE exam is also provided to interested students after college hours.

How do you prepare your students to deal with the outside competitive world?

"By asking them to stay updated with the latest trends and organizing competitions for them"

We encourage them to upgrade their skills and stay updated with the latest technologies. Because being a mentor, my main aim is to build good-quality professionals by inculcating the best technical skills and ethical values in them. Along with this, we organize healthy and positive competitions for them and ask them to work as a team and as individuals as and when required. Last but not the least, we arrange Alumni talks for the students to educate them about real-world scenarios, trends, and requirements.


Which extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of students?

"Social activities, technical sessions, and fun academic activities are organized by us"

We do have a student association in our college to organize national-level technical symposiums, inter and intra-departmental activities along with other events to ensure the overall growth and development of their friends and juniors. Along with this, we do have numerous technical and non-technical clubs to give a suitable platform to students to showcase their skills, creativity, innovations, and hidden talents. And lastly, we have the Rotaract club, NSS, and YRC club which regularly organize events for encouraging students to participate in social development activities. 


What challenges are you facing to uplift the education quality of your department?

"Handling student's attitude towards life and studies is a real challenge"

We are facing different kinds of hurdles at different levels, but the prominent ones are handling the attitude issues of students, managing time between academics, administrative and research, and consultancy work.


When you joined this college, what was your vision for it and how are you trying to achieve the same?

"To take uttermost care of students academic needs and work dedicatedly for the empowerment of institution"

Becoming a teacher was my childhood passion. And from the time I joined the education sector, my vision is to work for the empowerment of my students, department, and college with utmost dedication. And with the same aim, I joined this college Always being a student and getting updated is the best quality of any teacher, so I try to achieve my vision by attending webinars, seminars, ATAL FDP, MOOC FDP, Technical talks, Workshops on latest technologies to upgrade myself.


How does the curriculum of your department ensure the best practices of the industry?

"It enforces practical learning in students through events like seminars, professional visits, apprenticeship, and hands-on labs"

The curriculum of our department includes integrated courses and we do have project-oriented labs in college and all of them are equipped with the latest equipment and small electronic gadgets. We also train our students on how to use simulation tools and educate them about various programming languages, which are in demand in the outside world. Apart from this, we have signed MoUs with various industries through which students are sent for internships. Lastly, events like seminars, workshops, and industrial visits are arranged by us to enhance students' knowledge and industrial exposure.


How does your college enhance the faculty skills and prepare them as per industry standards?

"They are upskilled through FDPs, workshops and certification courses in latest technologies"

Our college regularly encourages the faculty members to do research and consultancy work, participate in Faculty Development Programs, and workshops organized by AICTE, and do certification courses using platforms like MOOC. In addition to this, we also conduct workshops in collaboration with industry experts, and being an Autonomous Institute, we involve faculty members in the curriculum development and syllabus framing process. Financial assistance is provided to faculty to help them publish research papers in reputed journals.


What approaches do you bring in apart from the curriculum to teach the students?

"We regularly update students about their academic performance and also arrange Alumni talks"

We have adopted an effective proctorial system to educate our students beyond books and curriculum. And we regularly give them feedback after taking their assessments or during class discussions because our main objective is to make students understand and explore the subject and its real-time applications. Apart from this, we motivate them to interact with our Alumni who are already working in reputed organizations.

I would like to advise my dear students to regularly upgrade their skills and have a positive attitude towards their goals and life. Also, maintain a proper balance between your personal and professional life and do that work that gives you self-satisfaction and happiness.
