Mrs. Soundara Bala S has been working as the Head of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department and as an Associate Professor at Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She has done her Bachelor's and Master's in the discipline of Engineering. She has also received a Gold medal for her excellent academic record in her Master’s Program. She started her teaching career in 1998 as a part-time lecturer in Tirunelveli and later she worked as a lecturer in Kovilpatti. Since 2002, she has been associated with Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College. Her research areas are power converters, nonlinear dynamics in converters, control systems and nonlinear control theory. At Anna University, she is presently conducting research on nonlinear dynamics in Modern power converters.
Being a Faculty of the EEE Department, what are your accountabilities towards the students?
"To teach and guide them in the best possible way using my knowledge and experience"
As a faculty my first and foremost responsibility is to facilitate good quality theoretical and practical knowledge to students and make them understand concepts in more depth. In addition to this, I am accountable for the overall development of my students.
How do you bring in a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?
"Industrial visits, apprenticeships and technical lectures are conducted by us to enforce practical approach"
To enforce a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects professional visits, internships, guest lectures by technical experts from industries are arranged regularly. Students are encouraged to do projects in industry.
Which best practices are offered by your department to students to help them gain necessary skills?
"Training on latest technologies and workshops are arranged for them"
Workshops and hands-on training are organized by our college on the latest technologies. And placement and career development training programs are also conducted by us on a regular basis.
What are your views upon the placements and higher education of students from your department?
"We offer career development trainings to them to make them aware about various things"
For the purpose of making students aware about the vast scope and job opportunities associated with every field in the market, we do have Career Development Programs for them which are generally conducted to strengthen both their soft and technical skills. We also have interactive sessions to help them with the higher education courses, application process and other things.
How do you develop your students to cope up with this competitive world?
"Regular mentoring sessions and motivational lectures are conducted for them"
Students are regularly mentored by the respective staff members and motivated to perform better in both academic and co-curricular activities. Students are exposed to periodical motivational lectures by experts.

Which extracurricular activities are organized by your college to enhance the students skills?

We have a wide range of co-curricular activities and events for students including symposiums, sports activities, cultural functions, yoga & meditation along with motivational programs and doctor's talks. All these activities are organized in a regular manner to upgrade the skills of students.
How does your college enhance the faculty skills and prepare them as per industry standards?

Faculty are trained through collaborative activities which are conducted as part of the MoU we have signed with our industry partners. They also work on consultancy projects which helps them in enhancing their skills as per the industry standards.
What approaches do you bring in apart from curriculum to teach the students?
"We offer special programs called E-Cube and SBI for students to enhance their research capabilities"
We have introduced a special program called E-cube (Enrichment, Enhancement and Empowerment), which is conducted every year and whose main motive is to encourage even the slow learners to present technical papers which pave the way for them to exhibit their talents. This platform is there to enhance their confidence and presentation skills. Apart from this, we have taken a unique initiative termed as Societal Beneficial Innovation (SBI) for the students to help them develop innovative projects which can address societal problems and provide resolutions for them.

What challenges are you facing to uplift the quality of education of your department?
"Students are not serious towards their studies after pandemic and that's a serious issue for us"
One of the real roadblock for us is the lack of students' interest towards their studies post pandemic. The excess use of electronic gadgets have reduced their concentration power and we are struggling to bring their focus back towards their studies.
