Topic:
The following appeared in an article in a consumer-products magazine:
“Two of today’s best-selling brands of full-strength prescription medication for the relief of excess stomach acid, Acid Ease, and Pepticaid, are now available in milder nonprescription forms. Doctors have written 76 million more prescriptions for full-strength Acid-Ease than for full-strength Pepticaid. So people who need an effective but milder nonprescription medication for the relief of excess stomach acid should choose Acid-Ease.”
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
Sample Essay:
The given argument claim that patient should choose non-prescription acid is over non-prescription Pepticacid. But the need effective mild non-prescription meditation to relieve excess acid in stomach. The evidence that is cited to support the conclusion is that doctors have written more than 76 million prescriptions provided acid is then peptic acid. I think I believe that the argument is not convincing for the following reasons:
To start with, the author does not show the connection between the prescribed and non prescribed variants. That is, without clarification of the detail or relationship, despite the fact that Acid-Ease has acquired more doctor's support for the prescription version, the readers can't decide whether Acid-Ease for the nonprescription variant prevails its qualities of the prescribed version or not. For example, if the element of the nonprescription version is very distinct from one of the prescription versions, it tends to be derived that the strength of the prescription version is not accessible in the nonprescription variant. Hence, the author should have clarified the properties of the nonprescription drugs and caused the perusers to have the option to comprehend the distinction.
Second, the writer refers to one factual piece of information, 76 million additional medicines, which is a number that doctors have prescribed for Acid-Ease contrasted with Pepticaid, this figure does not look good without the accompanying important data.
In the first place, the author should have certainly explained the time period of the inspection, say, the figure is for one year, or forever. Then, at that point, the writer should show a ratio instead of a number so the readers can decide the amount Acid-Ease is sustained by doctors. Moreover, various factors might change a doctor's decision on adopting a particular brand of medication, rather than the effectiveness. For instance, the producer of Acid-Ease may have driven operations to promote their product more regularly than does the manufacturer of Pepticaid, so that the doctors will always consider Acid-Ease while prescribing such kind of medication to the patients.
Secondly, could be that the cost of full-strength Acid-Ease is very less than the price of full-strength Pepticaid, so the doctors would recommend the more reasonable one to the patients regardless of whether that one is less effective than the other. The author recommends that patients should take the milder nonprescription Acid-Ease over the nonprescription Pepticaid. Despite this, the effectiveness of a specific medicine may vary from full-strength form to milder nonprescription form. Regardless of whether the facts confirm that the full-strength Acid-Ease is more successful than the full-strength Pepticaid, it probably won't be a similar situation when they are both in milder nonprescription form. The cost and availability of a product should be contemplated when a patient prefers the medication. If both of the medications have comparable effectiveness, the patients would be bound to pick the one with a more reasonable cost and the one simpler to purchase from the medical store.
Finally, there is no proof given to decide that somebody should not just pick the more strong variant of the drug if the stomach acid was only a minor problem. Factors like, how much the drug cost compared to the generic form, the capacity to reach a doctor simply, and analyzing the consequence of each medication would present a more strong argument to not pick the more strong drug even for mild stomach acid. It would be unwise for the patients to choose the milder nonprescription Acid-Ease over Pepticaid with the evidence provided. Lastly to conclude it would be important for the patient to choose the mild or non-prescription. The author would have proved the doctor have written no more prescription for as it is only because its effectiveness was strong.
