The argument is cited from a campaign run by Big Boards Inc where they are asking the companies of the River City area to promote their businesses through the former’s billboards. Big Boards has claimed that companies notice a rise in their sales if they use Big Boards’ billboards to advertise their locally manufactured products. Big Boards has bolstered their statement by putting up the example of a survey that they conducted last year. Through that survey, they have managed to capture their advertising power by displaying the current national women’s marathon champion’s picture. The statement has missed out on certain imperative factors because of which it cannot hold the position of a strong argument.
Firstly, the argument has stated about the experiment conducted by Big Board Inc to feature their work by displaying the picture and name of the current national women’s marathon champion and put up the billboard for a duration of three months. Before putting up the billboard, the champion did get acclamation and publicity for winning the title. But it was only 5% of 15,000 randomly surveyed people of River City that could recognize her. But with the rise of the billboard, and after the 3 month’s period. That percentage increased to 35%. Now the question lies, will the billboards provide equal recognition to a product or service? The argument doesn’t throw light on the approach of how an advertisement on the billboard will directly affect the sales of the company. The argument also hasn’t incorporated an example of a local manufacturing company that has experienced a rise in its sales.
Secondly, the argument has not considered the background and the business facts of the locally manufactured companies. If the company is enjoying a proper customer base, a central location, a neat and big space, no rent issues, a huge word of mouth, then there is no need for the company to incur extra cost and advertise itself on a billboard. But the author has failed to showcase the economic condition of the local manufacturing businesses there. It may also happen that the product or service’s quality of the companies is not standard enough but the prices are way beyond the purchasing capacity of the consumer. If this is the case, and even if the company spends thousands of dollars on advertising on a billboard, the consumer will not be able to purchase a product of that sort.
The author has nowhere mentioned the process of increase of sales. With the example of the survey conducted, the argument only talks about the picture and the name of the person. But, there is no evidence that the same approach will lead to higher sales. The argument has also failed to show the facts and data of the second survey conducted. There is no evidence of how many people were conducted in the second survey, and how many residents are present in the River City area. It may happen that the survey was conducted only on a partial group of people.
Had the author included all these factors in the argument it would have been a strong argument. The inclusion of the method of increasing sales, facts and figures of the second survey, and also the economic condition of the local businesses, would have made the argument a substantiated one.
