The following appeared as part of an article in a magazine devoted to regional life:

“Corporations should look to the city of Helios when seeking new business opportunities or a new location. Even in the recent recession, Helios’s unemployment rate was lower than the regional average. It is the industrial center of the region, and historically it has provided more than its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs. In addition, Helios is attempting to expand its economic base by attracting companies that focus on research and development of innovative technologies.”

Sample Essay:

The author has stated a fact that corporations should lookout for opportunities in the City of Helios. The author has also added that it is also a noteworthy place for residing. But what the author has missed out on is, providing enough shreds of evidence for choosing the City of Helios as a place for the business opportunity. This is majorly an unsubstantiated argument as the author has failed to elaborate on how corporations will be benefited if they functioned from Helios city. It generalizes the present scenario of Helios and directs corporations to find opportunities there. The changes in Helios may be momentary. There are no conspicuous claims provided in relation to unemployment and new jobs, a new place for residing, and also the different kinds of jobs.

Firstly, the author has stated that unemployment is rising and to tackle this, a new location for jobs should be the City of Helios as it provides business opportunities. Now, there can be numerous reasons for low employability, and a change of job location may directly impact the function of the company and also their margin of profitability. There are thousands of places having lower levels of employability, and their companies can maximize cheap labor but that is not feasible. In the former case the author has completely ignored statistical data about the level of unemployment making it a vague assumption again. If the unemployment percentage overall is 25% and that of the City of Elios is 24%, then that is not going to make a much noticeable difference in the business.

The second vague assumption contributed by the author is not mentioning the kind of corporate jobs that will become a hit if operated from the city of Helios . The author has mentioned the rise in the productivity of the manufacturing jobs after operating from the city of Helios. But the discussion is about corporations in general and not the manufacturing industry in particular. Had the author only mentioned extending business opportunities for manufacturing companies, they should have clearly mentioned it. Also, the author has not clearly mentioned the share, is it the share of population or size of a city? In either way, functioning from the City of Elios may become detrimental for the company as there is already high competition there. A newbie company may find it hard to create their base as the already market leaders would crush them. Another plausible factor that may affect businesses is the tax structure, in these areas tax structures tend to be higher.

Thirdly, the author has stated how the City of Helios is offering incentives to only a handful of corporations but not the others. If all the corporations are not included in the list, they would not want to extend their business in any other city. No corporation would want to open up their business without getting any facilities, and that would instantly harm their business. The author has also not thrown light on how the government would react to the fact of the City of Elios being filled with corporates and the rest of the country not being the same.

The author has not provided some major factual details when claiming his or her argument. If the City of Helios is a better place for the functioning of businesses then is it for all kinds of businesses or only manufacturing industries? Is the incentive structure applicable for all industries? Will there be massive changes in the tax structure for people who shift theirs? All these and many more questions are unanswered leaving this argument majorly baseless and vague.
