Sample Essay:
In the given passage it is claimed that local radio advertising can make businesses more profitable. The evidence is a ten percent increase in business that Cumquat Cafe has experienced during which it advertised on the local radio station. This argument is questionable because two questionable assumptions must be made for the stated evidence to support the author’s conclusion. The first assumption is that radio advertising alone has caused an increase in business at the Cumquat Cafe. The reason behind this is that if the same approach in the cafe is applied to other types of businesses it can grow their sales as well. According to my view, only one factor cannot be held responsible for the increased sales of a business. There are several other aspects that need to be considered while evaluating the success of any business.
Firstly, the argument is vague. There is no significant evidence from the author to support the argument. Looking at only one business’s growth it is inaccurate to say that the other business will also reach success just by advertising on the radio station. It is reasonable to believe that the cafe might have been able to attract a large number of customers. This is because plenty of people who listen to the radio are always willing to try the new things advertised on the radio. However, this idea is totally based on assumptions and not evidence. There is another possibility that the other cafes in the area must have provided bad service, or they are out of business. Maybe there were other economic factors that are unknown to us that affected the success of the cafe. It is very likely that the cafe’s success this year is because of the attractive discounts, creative new products or an updated menu. The author also states that this year’s sales grew up in comparison to the sales in the previous year due to radio advertising. In order to prove this, it is necessary to know, what promotion strategy did the Cumquat Cafe has before. Since there are no information provided, we will not be able to provide a judgement based on assumptions.
Secondly, it is not at all wise to assume that the same strategy could work for other businesses. Radio listeners were interested in the menu of the cafe, but they might not be interested in the products other businesses provide. For instance, if an investment bank advertises on a local platform and most of its targeted customers are big corporations. Then they are unlikely to invest just by listening to a random advertisement on the radio. They would always prefer some reliable source or professional consultants for such purposes. The proposition that the author has made based on the success of a single business might not be true for other businesses. Also, it is not mentioned in the argument that the radio station is able to customize the advertising campaigns as per the different needs of the different businesses. Every business has a different range of targeted customers. Some of them might want to run the advertisement of their business right after the music ends because their targeted audience likes music and if their advertisement plays right after that it can be beneficial for them. There are numerous aspects that need to be considered before making this claim that radio advertising can benefit all kinds of businesses. It is significant that radio advertising is also ready to adapt and work according to the demands of the different businesses to gain them more profit.
There are endless possibilities for the growth of the business. Therefore giving credit to the radio advertising for the increase in sales of the cafe is incorrect. The author should have differentiated between other types of businesses and the ability of the radio station to customize and work according to that. Also, it would be unwise of any other business to invest in radio advertising solely based on the one evidence presented. The author must have provided enough information to support the argument that the principal cause of the increased sales of cumquat cafes was radio advertising. Overall the argument is flawed and would be more convincing if all the above-mentioned factors were included.
