Topic: The following editorial appeared in the Elm City paper:
“The construction last year of a shopping mall in downtown Oak City was a mistake. Since the mall has opened, a number of local businesses have closed, and the downtown area suffers from an acute parking shortage, and arrests for crime and vagrancy have increased in the nearby Oak City Park. Elm City should pay attention to the example of the Oak City Mall and deny the application to build a shopping mall in Elm City.”
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
Sample Essay:
The argument states a piece of information as provided in an editorial in the Elm City paper. The argument narrates the incident of Oak City and its plan of constructing a shopping plan and how it was unfavorable for the city. The construction of a shopping mall in Oak City has resulted in traffic congestion, parking space crunch, eradication of local businesses, downtown area sufferance, and also a very critical issue of increase in crime and vagrancy. Even after all these factors, the argument lacks some important and substantiated evidence, due to which it is a weak one.
Firstly, the author has mentioned the critical situation and instances in Oak City and also added that the reason is the building of the shopping mall. The author of these factors has mentioned the loss of local businesses, but it has not mentioned anything about the total number of businesses previously present and the number of businesses that got disoriented. The author of the argument has not discussed the total number of distracted businesses and newly launched businesses at the same time. It may happen that the local businesses that have lost their businesses were due to some other reasons like - unmatchable audience, space issues, rent issues, and more. Maybe the newly launched local businesses are doing profitable business. The other factor that raises questions is, the increase in crime and vagrancy caused due to the construction of the shopping mall. This is a weak statement as the argument has not provided any factual evidence to prove the same. Rising crimes and vagrancy can also be a reason for the city’s elevated police patrolling and changes in the law.
Secondly, the assumption of considering the shopping mall culpable for the mentioned deterioration is not justifiable. The first reason for the loss of local businesses can be a sign of economic depression and since the argument nowhere talks about the economic situation, it is questionable for the audience to assess the cause. Then, the other after-effect of the increase in crime and vagrancy can be a result of the economic depression, which has turned the locals to be desperate for money in order to run their livelihood. In fact, since the argument doesn’t mention anything about the social scenario, it may also be assumed that crime and vagrancy have been prevalent for a long time back.
Lastly, the argument doesn’t place any connection between Oak City and Elm City. Without any sync between the two cities, it will not be possible for the audience to assess if Oak City’s situation after the construction of the shopping mall will be similar to Elm City. Since, both the cities might be having different demographics, cultures, and economic conditions, the result may differ for each of them. It may happen that Elm City is a more balanced place and has a hassle-free economic structure enabling it to conduct both local businesses and shopping malls simultaneously. Elm City might be having a detailed parking space area that would not cause any issues for the people.
In conclusion, it can be stated that the argument lacks certain crucial factors like providing the comparison between Oak City and Elm city, the background of the crime and vagrancy, and for how long it has been continuing, the reason behind the closing down of the local businesses, and more. If all this research have been conducted, the argument would have been a strong one.
