“Neither stronger ethics regulations nor stronger enforcement mechanisms are necessary to ensure ethical behavior by companies doing business with this department. We already have a code of ethics that companies doing business with this department are urged to abide by, and virtually all of these companies have agreed to follow it. We also know that the code is relevant to the current business environment because it was approved within the last year, and in direct response to specific violations committed by companies with which we were then working—not in abstract anticipation of potential violations, as so many such codes are.”

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.

Sample Essay:

The given argument is critically flawed as it comprises fallacies. The argument states that last year a specific government department approved a code of ethics. The code of ethics was for business partners that work with the department that complies with the code. Though many companies agreed to do so the functioning ethics code has no need for legal regulation or additional enforcement mechanisms.

To start with, there is no clarification about how unlawful cases have decreased since the current guideline. As indicated by the author, the current code, which the argument says is powerful since its significance to a particular case, was supported last year to fit the modern business atmosphere. If the code is adequately powerful to keep organizations from committing violations, there ought to be some correlation of information showing how the environment has been changed after the current code. Also, the author neglected to characterize what case the current code was referred to when it was set to power. The argument specifies that the code reacted to certain violations submitted by organizations before. The author neglects to take into account that the organizations with which the division is working now and will work later on might be extraordinary and may well need an alternate or more thorough arrangement of ethics policies. He also overlooks the constantly changing business climate. The business needs of the previous year are not the same as the present and of the following years. Hence. The current code of ethics is shortsighted in nature and does not have an image of things to come. Therefore, without understanding the case or activities that were being referred to, it is hard for everybody to decide if the code is sufficient not to add different ones as the author claims.

Secondly, the author says that the code was made through responding to specific violations submitted by organizations and that the code is strong in contrast with other codes which are complex. This is the same as the code is only for events that occurred actually in the past and cannot react to the others. Although being precise and sensible is a good thing, limited past experience has by nature a restriction. In addition, those violations committed more often should be considered when the code was built. Regardless of whether it was related to some particular cases because the reference cases cannot be always a benchmark that organizations normally or regularly violate.

The head of the department is well aware that violations are routine, it itself puts up a powerful case for stronger regulations. This awareness not only demands more powerful and effective regulations yet also stronger enforcement policies. Advising the organizations to maintain the regulations won't work unless the department guides by example and punishes those who violate the code of ethics. Hence, the code should be built specifically but also completely by taking samples from the past and by implementing them from theories and lessons acquired from other companies. Lastly, the argument is not complete and well reasoned. It would have been more convincing if the author have proved or provided more information about the contents of the ethical code.
