  • The entire article gives relevance and uniqueness to the readers by providing reasons and illustrations.

Topic: The following appeared in an Excelsior Company memorandum:

“The Excelsior Company plans to introduce its own brand of coffee. Since coffee is an expensive food item, and since there are already many established brands of coffee, the best way to gain customers for the Excelsior brand is to do what Superior, the leading coffee company, did when it introduced the newest brand in its line of coffees: conduct a temporary sales promotion that offers free samples, price reductions, and discount coupons for the new brand.”

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.

Sample Essay:

The author in the argument claims that in order to gain customers in an Excelsior company a new line of coffee must be introduced in its line of coffees. The argument stated by the author seems convincing for various reasons. The author failed to supply statistical data along with several key points. The leading company named Superior adopted the method of temporary sales promotion by giving out free samples of the product, enabling a price reduction policy, and also offering discount coupons for the new brand. The author has made the argument a vague one as it has missed out on many strong factors to make this argument a substantiated one.

Firstly, the author of the argument has only considered their approach of following a Superior brand for the continuance of their product. Now, by telling this fact, the author is also considering equality between Excelsior Company and Superior Company. This also means that the policies, methods, financial management, and marketing strategies of Excelsior Company are similar to Superior Company. The author has nowhere considered the important facts governing the Excelsior company like the demographics, location, manufacturing method, area, advertising, and branding team. There is no alternative plan provided by the argument if they are unable to meet the same requirements as the Superior company. The Superior Company has an established brand name and recognition and it will take Excelsior Company a prolonged amount of time to match the same. Since Excelsior will launch a new brand, it will take some time for people to trust it.

Secondly, the argument becomes a vague one when the author mentions following the marketing strategy of Superior company and also mentions how they have acquired the fame. The approach that Superior company adopted included temporary sales promotions offering free samples, price reductions, and also discounted rates. Now, there is no trace of the costs and financial planning of Excelsior Company in order to incur all these expenses. Since there is no mention of the costs, there are many questions rising whether Excelsior company would be able to implement the strategies followed by Superior brand.

Thirdly, the argument has ignored one very crucial detail that may affect the launch of Excelsior’s coffee brand immensely. There is no evidence that Superior Company’s marketing strategy was successful for its latest coffee brand. The author has merely stated about the leading company and their adopted approach. It may also happen that the marketing strategy has not impacted Superior’s growth at all. Maybe it is still on top because of past strategies, and financial planning, customer trust, and more. If Excelsior is concentrating only on Superior’s method and anticipating similar brand recognition then it may also face a huge collapse.

Lastly, to conclude, the argument is flawed for various reasons. To strengthen the argument, the author must provide information about similarities between Excelsior company and superior company. Even if it does, the author should have provided some sort of statistical data or financial evidence to show that the Excelsior Company will be able to pull off the expenses incurred in the temporary marketing and advertising approaches.
