- Instead of analyzing and exploring an argument that criticizes the writer's statement, a characteristic feature is chosen that is maintained throughout the length of the article.
- The entire article gives relevance and uniqueness to the readers by providing reasons and illustrations.
- Strong declarative or assertive statements are created with active language and statements of cause, reasons, and effect.
- The supporting statements are formatted and described well, briefed with two or three sentences, and concluded the article with a strong point
Topic: The following appeared as part of a column in a popular entertainment magazine:
“The producers of the forthcoming movie 3003 will be most likely to maximize their profits if they are willing to pay Robin Good several million dollars to star in it—even though that amount is far more than any other person involved with the movie will make. After all, Robin has in the past been paid a similar amount to work in several films that were very financially successful.”
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
Sample Essay:
The argument states about forthcoming movie 3003 where is the author states that it is most likely to maximise its profit if they are willing ng to pay Robin Good several million dollars to act in it. Though the amount is far more for any other person to be involved in the movie, Robin has been paid a similar amount to Work and several other films that had become financially successful. The information provided in the argument is not possible to be concluded as that the movie will be a success or not if Robin good has a role in it. In the following paragraph, we have analysed the flaws in the argument.
First of all, lakh successful movie comprises of various components. It may be a plot, a furnishing soundtrack or anything else. Only one component cannot describe the outcome of the movie. The producers could make a movie that shows Robin Good but whether it would be a blockbuster or not cannot be proclaimed. So before hiring an expensive star, it is necessary to find out the good parts in the movie that can make it a hit.
Secondly, it is also important to find a actor who fits the role. They can hire another actor of similar talents for a comparatively lesser fee. Or, the marketing team can work on branding and advertising, and spread about the launch of the film across the country. Aggressive marketing can evidently help in maximizing profits. If the argument had stated that hiring Robin Good is the only option they are sticking to, then it would have been easier for the readers.
Thirdly, the argument has given facts of how the films in which Robin Good has starred had gone on to become superhits. Now, there are no strong facts supporting this claim. The fame can be because of many unaddressed factors like the storyline, the location, the songs, or the presence of another superior character. The argument has focused more on the past incidents where Robin Good starred movies earned huge success. But there is no mention of a contingency plan if the film doesn’t see success this time. The film can use newer and younger actors who will put in new ideas, looks, and talent. The audience may be more thrilled to watch newer actors than Robin Good. Only because the actor has made hit movies doesn’t mean the whole world likes him. There is no evidence of Robin Good’s acting skills and popularity is similar to the previous years. If the author had mentioned anything regarding this fact, then it would have been a stronger argument.
To conclude, the argument has not considered a very common idea, that is hiring any other actor other than Robin Good. Is there no other actor having similar skills to Robin Good? Is there no other solution that can result in profit maximization? If the argument doesn’t provide responses to all these obvious questions, then it automatically making it a vague one. The author is portraying the idea that all these are wishful thinking and no research has been done. There is no presence of substantive evidence in the argument. There are many questions regarding this argument that the author left unanswered. The author can conclude that Robin Hood would be actually beneficial for the success of the forthcoming movie 3003. Here, nowhere is written about the other actors and their talents, other ways to maximize profits, Robin’s fame at that time, and whether he still holds that talent.
