If 7 Workers can Assemble a Car in 8 Hours, How Long would it Take GMAT Problem Solving

Question: If 7 workers can assemble a car in 8 hours, how long would it take 12 workers to assemble the same car?

  1. 3hrs
  2. 3 1/2 hrs
  3. 4 2/3 hrs
  4. 5hrs
  5. 6 1/3 hrs

Correct Answer: C

Solution and Explanation:
Approach Solution 1:

Given to us that 7 workers can assemble a car in 8 hours. The problem statement asks the time it would take for 12 workers to assemble the same car.

7 workers take 8 hours to do the task.
Therefore, if 1 worker does the task of 7 people, he needs 7 * 8 = 56 hours to do the same work.
Now it has asked to find how much time it would take to assemble a car by 12 workers.
Now the 56 hours of tasks are divided among 12 workers.
So they can complete the task in 56 / 12 hours of work,
Which is the same as 4 2/3 hours.

Approach Solution 2:
The problem statement states that:
Given:

  • 7 workers can assemble a car in 8 hours.

Asked:

  • To find out the time 12 workers would take to assemble the same car.

7 workers take 8 hours to do the task.
Therefore, time taken by 1 worker to do the task= 7 * 8 = 56 hours
Let the time 12 workers would take to assemble the same car be ‘n’ hours.
Then we can say, 12 x n = 56 (since 56 hours of task is split among 12 workers)
Therefore, n = 56/12 = 14/3 hours =  4 2/3 hours.

Approach Solution 3:
The problem statement implies that:
Given:

  • 7 workers can assemble a car in 8 hours.

Asked:

  • To find out the time 12 workers would take to assemble the same car.

Since, the number of workers increases, the required time to assemble the car decreases. Hence we can assign the products of the terms equal.
Let the time taken by 12 workers to assemble the car be x. Hence we can write the equation as:

7 * 8 = 12 * x
56/12 = x
x = 4 2/3

Therefore,  the time taken by 12 workers to assemble the car = 4 2/3 hours.
