Based on the structure and content of the GMAT release document, the best way is taken to explain the topic by considering the following response strategies, appreciating positive actions, and ignoring negative ones as much as possible:
- Instead of analyzing and exploring an argument that criticizes the writer's statement, a characteristic feature is chosen that is maintained throughout the length of the article.
- The entire article gives relevance and uniqueness to the readers by providing reasons and illustrations.
- Strong declarative or assertive statements are created with active language and statements of cause, reasons, and effect.
- The supporting statements are formatted and described well, briefed with two or three sentences, and concluded the article with a strong point
Topic: The following is part of a business plan created by the management of the Megamart grocery store:
“Our total sales have increased this year by 20 percent since we added a pharmacy section to our grocery store. Clearly, the customer’s main concern is the convenience afforded by one-stop shopping. The surest way to increase our profits over the next couple of years, therefore, is to add a clothing department along with an automotive supplies and repair shop. We should also plan to continue adding new departments and services, such as a restaurant and a garden shop, in subsequent years. Being the only store in the area that offers such a range of services will give us a competitive advantage over other local stores.”
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
Sample Essay:
The author of the argument has stated how the Megamart Grocery store has witnessed an increase in sales by 20% since the addition of a pharmacy section. The argument mentions that customers generally opt for places that have one-stop shopping options. They are also envisaging opening a clothing department in the upcoming years, it will widen their horizons and attract more customers. This is not the end, they are further planning to broaden their business by automotive supplies and repair shops. Also, their devising of adding restaurants and a garden shop to have a one-stop solution is continuous. Now, the argument is highly flawed because the author has not considered the demographics of the customers, the social condition when the pharmacy products were in demand, and also the economic condition of the pharmacy industry during that time. The argument also didn’t throw light on the amount of investment required to build the desired departments.
Firstly, the author completely ignored the demographics of the area. It may happen that the location of the Megamart Grocery store is mostly surrounded by senior citizens. It is quite anticipated that most senior citizens have medicines as their major requirement. With Megamart Grocery store developing a pharmacy department might have added to their accessibility of getting medicines. But the senior citizens will not have much interest in clothing, automotive, or repair shops. People of middle age or younger will be most fascinated by the new construction of these shops. If Megamart Grocery store is depending on the amount of profit and sales they have derived from the pharmacy department, and anticipating the same volume from the other departments then it can be misleading. They may not experience similar trends of profit and sales as local competitors.
Secondly, the argument has not mentioned anything about the economic policies and regulations during the time when the pharmacy department boomed. It may happen that the country witnessed an addition of a new drug or medicine that made its sales spike. This may have affected the Megamart Grocery Stores and its pharmacy section along with all other pharmacy stores in that area. This will mean, that the Megamart Grocery Store has experienced profit just like any other pharmacy store. The author has not mentioned anything about the statistics pertaining to the profit. Without these facts, Megamart Grocery stores may experience quite contrasting results after launching their clothing, automotive, and repair shops.
Lastly, the store has also not considered the amount of profit required to build the other departments. They have not mentioned any facts describing the investment required for the other departments. Only because they noticed a profit in their pharmacy department, they cannot develop other departments. They may face considerable loss in that case. They have not mentioned the funds required to open the other departments.
In conclusion, the argument can be stated as a highly flawed one. Had Megamart Grocery store mentioned the reasons for their 20% increase in sales by studying the facts, then it would have strengthened the argument. Furthermore, they are planning to open up more departments and make it a one-stop shop only based on the profits they noticed for their pharmacy department.
