Because they believe in the importance of their work, they have personal reasons to perform well, even when no financial reward is present. Thus, if our corporation began donating a significant portion of its profits to humanitarian causes, our employees’ motivation and productivity would increase substantially and our overall profits would increase as well.”

Sample Essay:

The author believes that the substantial profit donation will increase the productivity and enthusiasm of employees. The line of reasoning is that employees of not-for-profit organizations and charities are often more highly motivated than employees of for-profit corporations as they believe that their work helps to improve society. The argument is full of flaws and is open to a lot of questions since it presents insufficient evidence and doubtful assumptions.

Firstly, the argument is based upon the problematic presumption that the reasons for employees’ motivation are the same as for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. But, the author furnishes no data to demonstrate that this is the situation. It could be the case, for example, that the employees of for-profit corporations were involved in different subjects, such as their professional career or their salaries. All things considered, regardless of whether the for-profit corporation started to donate part of its profit to humanitarian causes, its employees’ motivation would not increase. The author did not show similarities and differences.. Therefore, if the author provides sufficient evidence from the internal investigation, this statement can be confirmed.

Secondly, the author neglects to demonstrate the highlights of the interviews quoted. It is not stated whether the conditions of the interviews were accurate and unbiased. Or, if the interviewed employees represent the entire group of employees in a non-profit organization. For example, considering that hardly three employees were interviewed and that they were quite rich (and hence, not very concerned about their wages) would not help the author’s principal judgment. As no evidence is presented to explain how these interviews were arranged, the notion shown appears to be fairly moderate. Also, while mentioning that employees of not-for-profit organizations imply that the reason for their greater motivation is the belief that their work helps to improve society, the author has not provided any detailed data concerning the cause of income for those companies with which they support the company and the services of the company. Therefore, it's difficult to believe that the employees in the not-for-profit organizations will have any logical reason to expect Monetary gains on the account of their efforts.

Finally, the author concludes that the only option for an organization to help society is to donate part of its profits to humanitarian causes. The author has also quoted an obscure term, the uncertain word, “a significant portion of its profit". Clearly, the organization will not be capable of expanding its overall profits, if the significant portion of its profit is higher than the added profit brought by the increased productivity. Hence again the author neglects to consider and investigate other alternatives. In conclusion, the argument is unconvincing on the grounds that it fails to provide sufficient evidence to support the assumptions on which it is based. To make a strong argument the author should explain more precisely the investigations and interviews mentioned to measure employees’ motivation. Also, the author should consider other options to increase employees’ motivation, and analyze their benefits and drawbacks prior to choosing the most sufficient for the organization.
