Should I choose IIT Bhubaneswar MEC or IIT Guwahati civil?
First of all, it depends on your interest whether you want to pursue engineering in Mechanical or Civil, and only then you can decide the better college. As the engineering branches are different it’s difficult to pick one college over the other.
Comparing the two courses in terms of placements offered last year, we see 83% of the Mechanical branch students got placed in IIT Bhubaneswar with average CTC 11.4 LPA. 77% of the Civil students in IITG got placed last year. The average package offered in IIT Guwahati was around 11 LPA while the highest went up to 39 LPA.
Being the older IIT, the infrastructure of IITG is good and the placements for both the core as well as the non-core sectors are also quite good. IIT Bhubaneswar has been showing good numbers in recent years and is developing gradually.
You can also look for some other options for mechanical other than IIT Bhubaneswar. If you manage to get a good score in Mains, you can look for admission in old NIT where you will get better future opportunities also good placement packages. While IIT Guwahati being an older institute is expected to attract many of the major recruiters from all the sectors and provide good CTC.

IITs are home to the best minds of the country and the crowd IITs attract cannot be compared to an institute like DTU. The faculty pool is refined and highly learned at IIts that are recruited through a rigorous process. IITs are funded by the central government and the campus and facilities are at another level.

What is better for mathematics and computing, IIT Kanpur vs IIT Kharagpur vs IIT Guwahati vs IIT BHU?
If you are interested in CSE but choosing Mathematics and Computing just for the sake of overlapping courses, then trust me you are making the wrong decision. I have seen many CSE branch seekers taking Mathematics and Computer to land CSE-related jobs. Let me tell you frankly, Mathematics and Computing are no substitutes for Computer Science.
If you want to get a deeper understanding of this, go through the Syllabus of Mathematics. You will find most courses that are theoretical, abstract, and purely mathematical and very few courses related to Computer Science. Mathematics at IITs is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is extremely tough, unlike JEE Math.
However, if you are passionate about Mathematics and want to pursue a research career in it, go for it. The courses might include lengthy proofs of Mathematical Induction and set and relation theory. Discuss the curriculum once with students of Mathematics at IIT and then make the final decision. Usually, the coursework in Mathematics and Computing is the same for all the IIT Branches.
To sum it up, if you are planning to take Mathematics and Computers just for the CSE courses, please make a better decision. My best advice would be to go for CSE in a better engineering college like IIT Hyderabad or Indore.
Which university is better for civil engineering: IIT BHU or IIT Guwahati?
For Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati will be a better option. It is among the old 7 IITs and offers good academics, placement, and faculty, for the branch. IIT Guwahati Civil Engineering placement record is good. Around 80% of students from the branch get placement opportunities. The average CTC offered to the student of this branch is around INR 17 LPA.
Which is better, civil in IIT Guwahati or mechanical at IIT Bhubaneswar?
If you don’t have any particular inclination toward Mechanical Engineering, then Civil Engineering from IIT Guwahati will be the better choice. It is an old IIT and offers good infrastructure, faculty, and a well-developed alumni base.

The course fee for Electrical at IIT Bhubaneswar is INR 2.74 Lakhs in the first year and INR 2.68 Lakhs each for the next three years. In the 2023 placements, up till the present date, the highest package offered to the Electrical Branch is INR 44.62 LPA and the average package offered is INR 19.05 LPA. The placement percentage for the electrical branch stands at 85.25%.
- IIT Mandi Electrical: The four-year electrical at IIT Mandi has a course fee of INR 2.85 Lakhs in the first year and INR 2.63 Lakhs each in the remaining three years. Hostel fee is around INR 7500. IIT BHU Civil Engineering is a 4-year full-time on-campus degree. The course fee for the first year is INR 2.28 Lakhs, while for the next three years, it is INR 2.13 Lakhs each. During the 2023 placements, the placement percentage for the Civil Engineering branch was 76.98%. The median package was INR 15.75 LPA and the Average Package was INR 19.09 LPA.
All the above institutions carry the prestigious IIT tag but to compare all of them that too using different courses is quite difficult. You must first choose the course that you wish to pursue and then decide which of these institutions best fulfills all your goals.
