Should I choose IIT Bhubaneswar MEC or IIT Guwahati civil?

AJ
Adwait Jain Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar

First of all, it depends on your interest whether you want to pursue engineering in Mechanical or Civil, and only then you can decide the better college. As the engineering branches are different it’s difficult to pick one college over the other.

Comparing the two courses in terms of placements offered last year, we see 83% of the Mechanical branch students got placed in IIT Bhubaneswar with average CTC 11.4 LPA. 77% of the Civil students in IITG got placed last year. The average package offered in IIT Guwahati was around 11 LPA while the highest went up to 39 LPA.

Being the older IIT, the infrastructure of IITG is good and the placements for both the core as well as the non-core sectors are also quite good. IIT Bhubaneswar has been showing good numbers in recent years and is developing gradually.

You can also look for some other options for mechanical other than IIT Bhubaneswar. If you manage to get a good score in Mains, you can look for admission in old NIT where you will get better future opportunities also good placement packages. While IIT Guwahati being an older institute is expected to attract many of the major recruiters from all the sectors and provide good CTC.

So, choose the college based on your branch of interest.

Will I get admission to the IIT in Mandi or Guwahati if I scored a mark of 250 in the JEE Advanced?

B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

Every year, there is a change in the marking scheme and exam pattern of JEE Advanced so it’s difficult to tell you if you can get admission to IIT Mandi or Guwahati with a score of 250. The best way is to refer to the JEE Advanced cutoff. The IIT that will accept you depends on your JEE rank. You cannot predict the rank before the main JEE examination.

Here is the IIT Mandi and IIT Guwahati JEE Advanced cutoff 2022 for your reference (2022)

Which college has better placements: IIT BHU vs IIT Guwahati vs DTU?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : July 7th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

It’s highly illogical to compare the likes of IIT BHU and IIT Guwahati with DTU. You cannot compare a tier-1 with a tier-2 college. IITs are home to the best minds of the country and the crowd IITs attract cannot be compared to an institute like DTU. The faculty pool is refined and highly learned at IIts that are recruited through a rigorous process. IITs are funded by the central government and the campus and facilities are at another level.

Specifically talking about placements, here is a comparative analysis of the placement statistics of the aforementioned institutions

IIT Guwahati

DTU

INR 1.8 CPA

Top Recruiters

American Express, Qualcomm, JP Morgan, C-DoT

Samsung, Instabase, Atlassian, Sprinklr, Amazon, Alphonso, Salesforce, Microsoft, Adobe, etc

From the above table we can infer that IIT Guwahati has the best placements and DTU and IIT BHU are at the same level.

What is better for mathematics and computing, IIT Kanpur vs IIT Kharagpur vs IIT Guwahati vs IIT BHU?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023

If you are interested in CSE but choosing Mathematics and Computing just for the sake of overlapping courses, then trust me you are making the wrong decision. I have seen many CSE branch seekers taking Mathematics and Computer to land CSE-related jobs. Let me tell you frankly, Mathematics and Computing are no substitutes for Computer Science.

If you want to get a deeper understanding of this, go through the Syllabus of Mathematics. You will find most courses that are theoretical, abstract, and purely mathematical and very few courses related to Computer Science. Mathematics at IITs is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is extremely tough, unlike JEE Math.

However, if you are passionate about Mathematics and want to pursue a research career in it, go for it. The courses might include lengthy proofs of Mathematical Induction and set and relation theory. Discuss the curriculum once with students of Mathematics at IIT and then make the final decision. Usually, the coursework in Mathematics and Computing is the same for all the IIT Branches.

To sum it up, if you are planning to take Mathematics and Computers just for the CSE courses, please make a better decision. My best advice would be to go for CSE in a better engineering college like IIT Hyderabad or Indore.

Here is the relevant information on each stream from the different institutions:

  • Economics at IIT Kharagpur: It offers a BS (Bachelor of Science) in Economics. It is a 4 year full-time on-campus program. The course fee for the first year is INR 2.24 Lakhs, while for the next three years, it is INR 2.17 Lakhs each year. During IIT Kharagpur placements 2023, the Highest Salary reached INR 2.68 CPA.

In the 2023 placements, up till the present date, the highest package offered to the Electrical Branch is INR 44.62 LPA and the average package offered is INR 19.05 LPA. The placement percentage for the electrical branch stands at 85.25%.

Hostel fee is around INR 7500. In the year 2022, 47 out of the 48 eligible students from the Electrical branch were placed. The total number of placement offers received by the Electrical branch was 62. In the year 2023, the highest salary offered at IIT Mandi placements was INR 60 LPA and the average salary was INR 25.23 LPA.
  • IIT Guwahati Civil & IIT BHU Civil: Civil Engineering at IIT Guwahati is a 4 year full-time on-campus program. The course fee for the same is INR 2.57 Lakhs in the first year and INR 2.12 Lakhs in the next three years. During the 2023 placements at IIT Guwahati, the highest domestic salary reached INR 1.1 CPA, while the highest international salary was INR 2.4 CPA. The top recruiters were American Express, Qualcomm, JP Morgan, and C-DoT, among others.

IIT BHU Civil Engineering is a 4-year full-time on-campus degree. The course fee for the first year is INR 2.28 Lakhs, while for the next three years, it is INR 2.13 Lakhs each. During the 2023 placements, the placement percentage for the Civil Engineering branch was 76.98%. The median package was INR 15.75 LPA and the Average Package was INR 19.09 LPA.

All the above institutions carry the prestigious IIT tag but to compare all of them that too using different courses is quite difficult. You must first choose the course that you wish to pursue and then decide which of these institutions best fulfills all your goals.

You can use the above statistics for course fees and placements to get a rough idea of each.
