How is the mechanical engineering department in IIEST, Shibpur as compared to departments like EE and ETC (placement & research wise)?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : October 17th, 2023

I am a first year B.Tech mechanical student at IIEST Shibpur. I will try providing some information about my department.

It is one of the best departments at IIEST. The faculty members are highly qualified, and their teaching methods are really good. They are actively engaged in research, and will happily encourage your research ideas on being approached.

The department performs decently well during placement season. Last year, 61 out of 75 B.Tech mechanical students were successfully placed. Companies like Tata Steel, CESC and Hyundai visit the department, and offer good packages to students.

IIEST has been known for its excellent teaching of core branches. Its EE and mechanical branches have one of the oldest and best labs in India. You can rest assured that the mechanical branch of this college is a pretty good one.

Studied at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur

Yes, it is possible to prepare for IES (Indian Engineering Services) while pursuing your M.Tech from IIEST Shibpur. However, it will require careful planning, time management, and dedication to both your studies and exam preparation.

Here are some tips that can help you prepare for IES while doing your M.Tech:

  1. Make a study plan: Create a schedule that allocates sufficient time for both your M.Tech coursework and IES exam preparation. It is important to balance both and give priority to your M.Tech coursework.
  2. Use your free time effectively: Use your free time, such as weekends and holidays, to study for the IES exam. Make use of this time to cover topics that are not included in your coursework.
  3. Join coaching classes: Joining coaching classes can be helpful as they provide structured study material, guidance, and support. It can also help you to stay motivated and on track.
  4. Practice previous year's question papers: Practicing the previous year's question papers can help you understand the exam pattern, identify important topics, and improve your time management skills.
  5. Stay focused and motivated: Keep reminding yourself of your goal and stay motivated. Avoid distractions and stay focused on your studies and exam preparation.

Remember, balancing both your M.Tech studies and IES exam preparation can be challenging, but with proper planning and dedication, you can succeed in both.

How much should I get in JEE Mains to get into IIEST Shibpur?

NR
Nishikesh Roy Posted On : March 16th, 2021
Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur

If you are somehow not specific on what branch, then a rank up to 22,000 (other states) can be expected to safely accomplish a branch at IIEST, Shibpur. You require to obtain marks of about 150 - 160 in JEE Mains for that.

For home-state students, the closing cutoff is usually around 30000 in general.

Cutoff:

The recent cutoff trends at the institute are tabulated below.

Branch

2019

2018

Aerospace Engineering

1499 - 22344

3729 - 20377

Civil Engineering

19147 - 27598

18696 - 25038

Computer Science & Engineering

4978 - 9379

2118 - 7585

Electrical Engineering

10445 - 16511

9829 - 15720

Mechanical Engineering

11669 - 19625

8319 - 18560

Mining Engineering

22516 - 31923

21516 - 29337

Information Technology

9524 - 17031

12734 - 17573

Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering

9219 - 11482

4354 - 10889

Metallurgical & Material Engineering

19784 - 28592

20850 - 27215

Architecture, Town & Regional Planning

748 - 2155

940 - 1372

My cousin’s JEE-Main score was 142, and the normalized score was 175. Since there is no normalization nowadays, a suggestion would be to work hard for the score.

And, a score anywhere between 180 would give you a position in the stream of your choice, you can be confident about that. Hope this gave you an idea about the score required to take admission at IIEST Shibpur.

Can I change department in IIEST Shibpur?

SB
Shalini Bist Posted On : April 16th, 2021
B.E. Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur

Most of the institutes do not allow students to change the department. But, IIEST Shibpur allows the students to change at the end of the first year of graduation.

The process of change is mentioned below:

  • The first step to change is to fill the application form for a change of department.
  • Change is allowed in the department based on CGPA.
  • For this, you need to work pretty hard in the freshman year. You must secure a minimum of 9 CGPA. The interested students must be in the top 10% of the batch to be eligible for any change.
  • Each department states its vacancy limits. If you have applied for a popular branch, your application for change might be rejected as many students will be ahead of you.

The first-year syllabus is the basics of all the departments. It explains the basics of computer programming, electronic engineering, and others to all freshers. The change crops down after one month of classes. So, the students need to catch up with the departmental changes.

IIEST offers an under-graduation course in engineering and architecture, but you cannot change your department if you are admitted to the architecture department. It is better to choose for architecture department carefully as there will be no change after opting for it.

Which is the better choice, IIIT Sri City or IIEST Shibpur for civil engineering?

AS
Abhay Sukla Posted On : March 5th, 2021
B.Tech Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2021)

Here IIEST Shibpur will be a better choice for civil engineering as it is one of the oldest civil engineering colleges in our country and has improved a lot since its inception.

Batch Size:

One of my friends goes to IIEST, according to him the Civil Department has more than 100 students in a single batch.

Faculty:

The faculty of the civil engineering department is experienced, knowledgeable, and are highly qualified. They are great at teaching the concepts and are nice and friendly too. However, faculties sometimes tend to use Bangali while teaching, which is difficult to follow for out-of-state students.

Campus Life:

The campus is also very beautiful and the lifestyle at college is very lively. The hostel also provides many services and a student can decide the menu for their lunch and dinner.

Collaborations:

IIEST Shibpur has collaborations with the following institutes.

  • University of Queensland
  • University of Hiroshima
  • Hokkaido University
  • University of South Wales
  • Zurich University
  • California University
  • University of Cambridge

So, you can definitely choose IIEST Shibpur for Civil Engineering. But for placements don’t depend entirely on the institute.

What are some helpful tips for students starting their first year at IIEST Shibpur?

SG
Saunak Guha Posted On : March 5th, 2021
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2020)

Here are some useful tips which may come in handy during your time at the institute.

Academics:

It is the most important factor. From the first year itself, you need to maintain a CGPA of 8.5. If you wish to top your class, you need to study regularly. If you do not study on a regular basis make sure to start preparing at least 2-3 weeks prior to examination. Solve previous years’ questions so that you don’t repent later. Interact with sincere seniors. Their experience can be helpful. Make sure to collect previous year’s questions, questions are usually repeated.

VT or Internships:

During placement, recruiters ask for internship experiences. Apply for internships preferably in a government institute after completing 1st or 2nd year of your course. You will get the information on the official website. Ask your seniors too. They can also provide useful information. Vocational training is important for core branches. You can do your vocational training in any industry like thermal power plants or steel plants.

CV:

Try to build a strong CV. You can go for Tedx, it has good international recognition. Participate in big fests and try to win, these look good on a CV.

Sports:

The institute does not place much focus on sports. But you should try to participate in games and sports. There are inter hostel, inter-department tournaments, and also fests organized by halls and hostels.

Seminars:

Try to attend seminars on the topics that interest you. If you are interested in competitive examinations like GATE, CAT, or others attending seminars organized by coaching institutes will be a big help.

Hope these tips will help you.

Which one of these two is better for M.Sc in physics, IIEST Shibpur or NIT Durgapur? Are there any placements for M.Sc students at IIEST?

AS
Akriti Sinha Posted On : August 16th, 2022
B.Tech in Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology Durgapur

NIT Durgapur will be better for an M.Sc Physics. The quality of academics and exposure offered is better than any of the non-tech institutes in the region. Most students prepare for competitive examinations like NET, GATE, JEST, BARC, ISRO, etc. NITD also has collaborations with many national institutes and research labs.

Yes, IIEST offers placements to MSc students. But the salary packages offered aren’t very high.

Is it easy to get a 9 CGPA at IIEST Shibpur?

SN
Subhadra Nandi Posted On : March 12th, 2021
Bachelor of Engg. Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2019)

It might be not so difficult but not too easy. If you can sit and study for 8 hours and stretch longer you can get 9 pointers easily and successfully. If you spend most of your time wasting, then it is very much possible and sure you aren’t getting either of pointer and knowledge. Also, getting a 9 pointer or more is easy if you have interest in the field you are pursuing.

  • It is to be noticed that, it’s relative to your credibility to the department you are seeking engineering in.
  • Some departments are easier to score good grades while others aren’t.
  • The number of 9 pointers varies department wise. On an average you cannot see many 9 pointers in a class. Very few are that studious.
  • You have to be sincere, regular, and attentive in classes to be a 9 pointer and to maintain your high CGPA.
  • You can achieve a CGPA more than 9 and above, but you have to be regular and attend at least 80% of class in a semester.
  • Give constant efforts to complete your syllabus before the exam day and solve maximum of your assignments and tutorials yourself. Then getting 9 pointers will become easier.
  • Also, you should do really well in practicals as it adds on the marks, increasing your pointer eventually.
  • You have to revise all the notes and books time to time and thoroughly before your exams.
  • Preparing the notes is vital.

Yes, you can achieve 9 pointers with genuine approach and studies. Write as well as read enough books while preparing for exams. This will eventually help you in not only exams but also in gaining knowledge. Following these pointers will also help you.
