NIT Patna PhD Eligibility Criteria 

For admission to any of the above-mentioned Ph.D. programs, the candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • Masters degree or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline with at least 6.5 CGPA or 60% marks in aggregate from a recognized institute or university.
  • B. Tech/ B.E./ B. Arch or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline with at least 8.5 CGPA or 80 percent marks in aggregate from a recognized university.
  • Relaxation of 5% will be provided to candidates belonging to the SC/ ST/PwD categories.
  • The sponsored candidates will be exempted from GATE/ NET qualification.

Admission to the institute is made on the grounds of eligibility and the performance of the candidate in the written exam and the screening process. The admission committee of each department conducts its own screening/selection process. The candidate has to appear for the admission test and interview separately for each of the disciplines that she/he has applied for.

NIT Patna PhD Admission Process

There are three stages involved in the NIT Patna PhD admission process:

  • Admission screening test question: The stage is only for Full Time Institute Fellowship. This round involves 40% of the total marks required to get admission at NIT Patna PhD. The 40% marks scale is for Gen/ OBC students. SC/ ST category students get 35 % of the total marks. Syllabus for screening test is Syllabus of GATE/NET Exam of respective discipline.
  • Interview: Candidates qualifying the screening test are called for the interview round.
  • Merit list: Merit list is prepared by the admission committee based on the marks obtained in the previous rounds. To get selected, NIT Patna PhD cut off marks should be more than 50%. Selected candidates shall be notified on Institute website bythe Academic Section.

How to Apply? 

All the candidates are required to fill up the application provided on the institute’s official website.

  • One must register with their email id to receive the login credentials.
  • After successfully logging in, the candidate has to fill up the application form.
  • Once registered under part Time Ph.D. program at the institute, the conversion of candidature will not be permitted.
  • The candidate will be required to upload a scanned copy of their photograph and signature.
  • The application fees should be paid online only through the Institute’s website.
  • The applicant has to pay a fee of INR 1500/- (INR 750/- for SC/ ST)
  • After submission of the online application, the candidate should download the printed application for future reference.
  • Applicants from SC/ ST category must enclose a valid Certificate issued by a competent authority to claim relaxation in application Fee.
  • A candidate can apply for multiple departments (if s/he is eligible for that discipline) but separately.

NIT Patna PhD Course Details

  • The NIT Patna Ph.D. Program Structure consists of the following stages:
    • Course work and evaluation
    • Research proposal submission and assessment
    • Periodic assessment of research progress
    • Pre-synopsis seminar and synopsis submission
    • Submission of Ph.D. thesis and adjudication
  • In case of theory, a component/ course candidate is required to appear at Mid and End semester examination for 40% and 60% of full marks respectively.
  • In case of Lab Component/ course (practical work) a candidate is required to work in the Institute or at any other Institute of National Importance/ Research organization approved by the DRC.
  • PhD course work requirements can also be fulfilled by taking online courses such as MOOCs. Credit of such courses will be considered for fulfillment of requirement of total credit for completion of course work.

NIT Patna PhD Stipend

NIT Patna PhD stipend is given to all the research scholars admitted to the research program except the sponsored scholars and members of staff of the Institute. Stipend to these categories of scholars is given as per the rules of MHRD, Govt. of India. Monthly stipend given to NIT Patna PhD scholars is around INR 31,000 to INR 34,500.
