Scholarship provided by the college.
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) believes in assisting its students with financial help. CUSAT Kochi offers a variety of scholarship schemes from various resources to its students. These scholarships are awarded on a merit and need basis to the students.
Three categories of CUSAT Scholarships are mentioned below:
Ques. Does CUSAT offer any scholarships?
Ans. Yes, CUSAT offers scholarships under three categories i.e Govt. of Kerala Portal for Student Scholarships, National Scholarship Portal for Students and Commonwealth Scholarship from the UK.
Ques. What is the Commonwealth Scholarship for CUSAT Students?
Ans. The Commonwealth Scholarship is a prestigious program offered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the United Kingdom. Various scholarships offered under this category include the following:
CUSAT is ranked 63rd in the overall college rankings of NIRF for 2023. It has two colleges for B.Tech. One of them is SOE i.e. School of Engineering in Kochi City, and the other is CUCEK i.e. Cochin University College of Engineering in Pulinkunnu. It is a village roughly 100 km away from SOE.
The cutoff varies from year to year. My brother’s rank was 3129. He got Civil in SOE, a few years back. For CS/IT, you’ll need at least a rank >1000. The placements are decent for CS/IT and Safety & Fire graduates.
The average package for these streams is 3 LPA, and the highest package is around 20 LPA. Amazon sometimes visits the campus to make recruitments. The placements are in a poor condition for other branches. Moreover, the CUCEK campus lacks lab facilities for Civil and Mechanical.
Overall, CUSAT is a decent choice for B.Tech, but it lags behind in terms of placements and facilities for non CS/IT branches.
In the context of CUSAT "spot admission" and "real-time admission" are terms that are sometimes used interchangeably, but they can have slightly different meanings depending on the specific context. Both the terms are explained below:
Spot Admission :
Real-Time Admission :
Depending on the unique policies and practices of the institution, these phrases may be used differently in the context of CUSAT or other universities. While real-time and spot admission both attempt to speed up the admissions process, there may be differences in the specific steps and lead times.
CUSAT Kochi offers two types of MBA programs, Full-Time and Part-Time for a duration of two years and three years respectively. The full-time MBA offers specialization in Marketing, Finance, HRM, and International Marketing among a few others while the part-time evening professional MBA program offers a specialization in International Business and Travel and Tourism. The MBA program offered by CUSAT is an AICTE-approved two-year full-time PG program. The primary goal is to offer opportunities for pursuing a career in business. Curriculum: The curriculum is well-structured such that students are able to develop a thorough grasp of the basic concepts and techniques of management as well as the ability to practice them. During their final year, students work on a two-month independent research study-cum-internship at a registered corporation. Admission: Admissions into the program are done on the basis of cores in management entrance tests - KMAT of Kerala or C-MAT of AICTE or CAT of IIMs followed by a GD and PI round conducted by the university. Placements: CUSAT MBA placement scenario is decent and this year the CUSAT School of Management Studies recorded the highest and average packages at INR 20.14 LPA and INR 9.32 LPA, respectively. The institute maintains a 95% placement record every academic year and the students received 4 International offers also. School of Management Studies, CUSAT follows the motto of "Moulding Managers for Mankind” so you can expect excellent opportunities here!
One of my friends shed light on the actual scenario of the Fire and Safety Department of CUSAT
So, I will recommend you to not join the Fire and Safety branch in CUSAT at any cost.
A score of 150 marks in the CUSAT CAT exam will fetch you a rank between 6000-7000. Based on this rank, you will only get core branches like Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical in CUCEK, the second campus in spot admission only.
If you aren’t aware of spot admission, please visit the institute and get information on the same. If you aren’t able to get spot admission, you can also take admission through an NRI seat in SOE on the first campus
CUSAT offers an amazing campus life and trust me the locals of Kerala are very hospitable and humble. You will love your time here even as a North Indian. However, every coin has two sides and likewise being a North Indian at CUSAT will bring forth some challenges too. I have listed down a few
Language barrier: Malayalam is a language that is difficult to understand and even more to learn so North Indians face major language issues here. But the bright side is your Malyali peers will help you and never make you feel left out.
Cultural differences: Every aspect of CUSAT portrays Kerala's culture be it the faculty, crowd, or food. Adjusting to this culture might be a little difficult for North Indians.
Mindset difference: Despite being a metro city, the mindset is narrow and Kerala culture is highly followed. Girls are restricted from roaming around past sunset, and rarely will you see them dressed in western wear.
Home visits: While the local students can be seen visiting their homes during 2-3 days' leave, North Indians cannot go to their homes unless the semester ends. But most students prefer traveling and enjoying with friends rather than visiting their families so it’s not a big issue.
Campus politics: As a North Indian you cannot comment much on the campus politics in CUSAT due to cultural and language barriers. Hence most of the organizational and administrative roles are assigned to locals.
These are some common problems faced by North Indians in CUSAT. If you think you can overcome these, you are welcome here!
CUSAT offers a four year B.Tech program in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding. My brother pursued this degree from CUSAT a few years back.
Naval Architecture deals with vessels, moving or stationary, that serve in a marine atmosphere. The vessels include ships plying in ocean or coastal areas, offshore rigs, underwater vehicles, submarines etc. Naval Architects perform mathematical calculations to ensure the sea worthiness of these vessels. For this purpose, softwares and programs are created and fed as algorithms to a machine. Most universities offer a secondary specialization alongside Naval Architecture. If you pursue your B.Tech in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding, other than N.A. calculations, you will also work on shipbuilding techniques and practices. My brother also worked on a project on the preliminary design of a ship plying in a specific route required to carry cargo(s) at its maximum capacity(meeting the owner’s requirements).
As far as job prospects are concerned, as a Naval Architect, you can be employed by shipping companies, classification societies, consultancies, or research institutes. You can also work at shipyards or at offshore companies that manufacture maritime equipment like life-saving appliances or ship engines.
Indian organizations offer a limited salary in this field, usually ranging from 25,000 - 50,000 INR per month. Abroad, the salary usually ranges from 12 - 40 LPA. Your salary will depend upon your location and job profile. Offshore offers good packages which are way higher than shipbuilding. But because of changes in oil prices at present, only a few offshore companies hire freshers. Depending on your job type and designation, you will get to travel sometimes/frequently for business, projects or some technical testing work.
You can go for this course at CUSAT. However, I would recommend you to first prioritize the top Indian and Foreign institutions offering this program and to keep CUSAT as a secondary choice.
To be honest, you will be very disappointed if you join CUSAT expecting to be taught by highly experienced professors and a top-notch infrastructure. If you are nevertheless joining CUSAT, bear in mind that you will have to resort to self-study most of the time.
Considering all the above points, I don’t think it’s wise to join CUSAT in Kuttanad for Engineering.
CSE is the most sought out branch of CUSAT. Since you have 400 other candidates waiting ahead of you, your chances of getting CSE are very low. If you have applied for some other branches, you can wait for the results. Else, if CSE is your only choice, try some other good college. You can come for the spot round if getting into CUSAT is your dream.
Food will not be an issue at CUSAT. The food you will get at the mess of CUSAT is similar to that of any other engineering colleges in India.
The food provided at the campus is great. But it is Kerala food. If you are from North India and habituated to the type of Noth-Indian food, you may have difficulty in adjusting. Since the food at the mess is prepared in coconut oil. If you are opting for a hostel you have to choose the mess facilities too. But it is not as bad as it sounds, and you can survive and adjust with time.
You can get Noth-Indian Food by tiffin service too. You can also find many Bihari and Bengali cooks in the vicinity of the campus. There are also a few North-Indian messes near the college. In case you are staying in a rented flat or room, it would be better to hire a cook.
It may take some time to adjust but you can definitely survive on the food available at CUSA. So, do not treat food as a deciding parameter for not choosing CUSAT.
You can check here to see what types of facilities CUSAT provides.
