IIT Ropar Ph.D: Fees 2025, Course Duration, Dates, Eligibility

IIT Ropar PhD admissions 2024 are open now. Eligible candidates can register online for admission by visiting official website before October 25. IIT Ropar full time PhD admissions are granted in a total of 5 categories i.e Institute Fellowship, Govt./ Smi Govt Fellowship awardees, Fellowship through Project and Self Financed Indian Nationals, including those on study leave, and Sponsored candidates. Admission to full time PhD Program at IIIT Ropar is granted as per a valid score in GATE/CSIR/U GC-NET/DSTINSPIRE/JEST /NBHM or other national fellowship.

IIT Ropar Ph.D Eligibility Criteria

• Candidates must have obtained 60% marks or 6.5CGPA at postgraduate level.
• Candidates from any IIT with minimum 8.00 CGPA/ CPI can also apply for PhD courses. Such candidates are exempted from the requirement of GATE qualification.
• A relaxation of 5% is provided to SC/ ST candidates.
• ERP and Part time candidates are required to have a minimum work experience of 2 years and GATE qualification is not mandatory.
• Eligibility of PhD programme for ProjectStaff of the institute is master degree in Engineering/ Science/ Humanities with 60% or 6.5 CGPA or bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 8.0 CGPA/ 75% or 7 CGPA/ 65% with valid GATE score. Additionally, 6 months of experience in the project work at IIT Ropar is must.

Admission to PhD courses at IIT Ropar are based on interview rounds supplemented by a written test, if necessary. The institute has classified its selection procedure as per the categories of aspirants:

• Regular Full-Time Scholars: Written test/ Interview + GATE exam score
• Research Fellows under Projects/ Schemes: Written test/ Interview + GATE exam score
• Direct PhD: The category is open to CFTIs and non-CFTIs BTech students applying for a PhD program. For CFTIs students, no GATE or other equivalent national exam required. Only, CGPA of at least 8.0 or more out of 10. For non-CFTIs students, GATE score along with 8.0 CGPA out of 10 is required at the time of joining.
• External Registration Program: GATE or equivalent qualification is not required for admission. The candidates should have completed full-time employment of atleast 2 years of experience as on the last date of application.
• Part-Time PhD/ IIT Ropar Staff: No GATE exam scores. The candidates will be selected for admission based on their performance in the interview round.

Follow the steps below to apply for the PhD courses:

1. Visit the E-Portal of IIT Ropar and create a login.
2. After that, the candidates must log in to the website and follow the links on the left side of the menu and fill up the application form. Candidates must be alert about the emails that are sent to them by the college.
3. Fill the admission form with necessary details. 
4. Upload the following documents.
   • Scanned photo and signature
   • GATE or any other valid scorecard
   • Disability Certificate
   • SC/ ST certificate
   • Copy of Master's/ bachelor’s degree certificate
5. Click on the submit button.
6. After the form submission the candidates should pay an application fee which is INR 200 for Gen/OBS and INR 100 for women/ SC/ST/ PWD.

• Candidates found eligible will be called for a written test followed by an interview.

IIT Ropar Ph.D Course Details

PhD at IIT Ropar is offered in 11 specializations, the eligibility criteria for which is tabulated above. It is a research-based and detailed study of the subject that the students wish to get their certificate. The course makes them adaptable to the current methods or research and learning throughout the course. The institutes Ph.D courses are spread over sciences, humanities, social sciences, and engineering. 

Credit Requirement: The Ph.D. courses are a broad-based program that requires a minimum course credit requirement that the students must complete. 

Course Duration: Minimum period for candidates with B.Tech /M.Sc/ MA degree or its equivalent is 3 years (2 years for exceptional cases) and 2 years for candidates with M.Tech degree or its equivalent and 4 years for non-teaching staff of IIT Ropar.

Course Work: In addition to this, they also have an additional academic examination, synopsis reading, and thesis submission. They also provide interdisciplinary research through the joint supervision of the teachers. Course work has to be normally completed within 18 months from the date of registration with a minimum CGPA of 7.0.

Comprehensive Examination: It consist of two parts:

1. Examination on basic concepts of the subject

1. Written examination: Minimum weightage is 30%
2. Oral examination: Minimum weightage is 30%.

iii. Minimum passing marks for written+oral: 50%

1. Thesis proposal seminar 

Thesis Submission: The candidates of all categories shall normally submit their thesis within a period of 5 years (7 years for exceptional cases).

IIT Ropar Ph.D Scholarships

Scholarships are provided for regular full-time scholars. The duration of the director’s fellowship will be maximum for a period of 6 months. Pre-doctoral fellows are eligible for scholarships upto INR 50,000. Many Govt/ Semi Govt Fellowships(CSIR, UGC, DAE, DST, DBT, NBHM, etc.) are also awarded to research scholars.
