The basic eligibility criteria for PhD at MNNIT are either a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject with a 60% or 75% aggregate score respectively. Applicants must also qualify GATE/ NET in a relevant subject to be considered eligible. Here are some other important informations regarding PhD Admission to MNNIT:
- Applied Mechanics, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Electronics, and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, GIS Cell, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Management Studies are the 14 academic disciplines in which PhD scholars can pursue their research work.
- The maximum annual intake capacity for the program is 175, including institute stipendiary/ self-financed/ sponsored full-time research categories, and sponsored part-time research category of candidates.
- Application for admission is an online process and applicants are required to qualify a written test and/ or interview.
- The PhD academic session is split into two semesters, each of 14 weeks’ duration. Admission is normally made in May-June.
MNNIT PhD Eligibility Criteria
The specified minimum score/ CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) mandates as the eligibility criteria for each PhD discipline is elaborated below. For SC/ ST candidates, the specified minimum score/ CPI will be relaxed as per Government directives.
PhD in Engineering
- Postgraduate degree in a relevant branch of Engineering/Technology with a minimum score of 60% or 6.5 CPI, or
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Master’s Degree in any related discipline with a minimum score of 75% marks or 8.0 CPI.
PhD in Management
- Postgraduate Degree in Management/Technology/ Engineering/ Economics/ Commerce/ Science/ Computer Applications/ Social Science with a minimum score of 60% or 6.5 CPI, or
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a minimum score of 75% or 8.0 CPI, or
- Qualified Chartered Accountant with a minimum score of 60% in both Bachelor’s degree and CA examination. Such candidates should also have at least three years’ experience of professional practice as CA.
PhD in Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences
- Postgraduate Degree in a relevant subject with a minimum of 60% Marks or CPI 6. with a minimum score of 60% or 6.5 CPI, or
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Pharmacy a minimum score of 75% or 8.0 CPI.
PhD in Geographic Information System (GIS) Cell
- M. Tech. or equivalent in GIS & Remote Sensing/ Civil Engineering/ Computer Science and Engineering/ Electronics/ Information Technology/ Agriculture Engineering/ Mining Engineering with a minimum score of 60% or 6.5 CPI, or
- M.Sc. or equivalent degree in GIS & Remote Sensing/ Applied Geology/ Geophysics/ Geography/ Environmental Science/ Computer Science or a Master of Computer Application with a minimum score of 75% or 8.0 CPI 8.0, or
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a minimum score of 75% or 8.0 CPI.
Keynote:
- It is mandatory for candidates applying for the Institute Stipendiary Full-Time Research Scholar category to qualify GATE/ NET in a relevant discipline.
- Candidates fulfilling the eligibility condition of a Postgraduate Degree in Science/ Computer Application/ Commerce/ Economics/ English/ Management or any subject of Humanities/ Life Sciences/ Social Science should also qualify GATE/ NET in relevant discipline.
- Full-time and part-time research scholars as well as self-financed candidates who have received UGC/ CSIR/ DST fellowships.
MNNIT PhD Admission Criteria
MNNIT PhD applicants are required to qualify a written test and/or interview conducted by the institution. Candidates with valid GATE/ NET scores or UGC/ CSIR/ DST fellowships are exempt from appearing in the selection procedure.
The application procedure is an online process and can be accessed through the official portal https://academics.mnnit.ac.in/admission2020. The steps involved in the process are listed below:
Step 1: Register at the online application portal to receive an application ID
Step 2: Log-in to the portal with the application ID and complete the online application form with the correct details.
Step 3: Upload scanned copies of all documents (PDF files up to 1 MB) and passport-size photographs (JPEG file up to 30 KB) to the application form.
Step 4: Submit Application fee online. The application fee is INR 1200 (INR 600 for SC/ST category applicants)
Step 5: Review the application before submitting it. Ensure to take a printout of the filled-in application form and e-receipt of application fee payment for future reference.
Please note that separate applications need to be filled if applying to more than one department.
- The institute releases the list of shortlisted candidates who are to appear in the written test and/or interview on the application portal.
- Institute will verify the eligibility of candidates either at the time of the interview or during document verification.
- The result of the selection process and offer of admission is made public via the official portal and shortlisted candidates need to accept and pay the prescribed fee within the specified deadline to secure their seat.

Please note:
- MNNIT stipulates that out of 16/ 32 total course credits, minimum 12/ 24 credits be earned through coursework while the balance 4 credits are earned through Research Seminar and Mini-projects.
- In addition to the above-mentioned course and credit requirements, the department may prescribe additional credits of Courses/ Thesis work.
- All PhD. students will have to register for a minimum of 8 credits and a maximum of 20 credits every semester.
- The 1st-semester credits are earned through the Course Work/ Research Seminar/ Mini Project/ Thesis Performance.
- The 2nd and 3rd-semester credits include the Comprehensive Exam and State-of-the-art Seminar along with the Course Work/ Research Seminar/ Mini Project/ Thesis Performance.
- The 4th-semester credits are earned through State-of-the-art Seminar/ Thesis Performance.
- The 5th and 6th semesters concentrate solely on Thesis Performance.
- Prior to submitting the PhD thesis, a student has to complete the specified coursework and clear the comprehensive examination with the required CPI. The examination is normally oral in nature but may be supplemented with a written test at the department’s discretion.

Ques. What is the total strength of PhD students at MNNIT?
Ans. As per data submitted to NIRF, 409 students are registered as full-time research scholars with MNNIT as of AY 2017 – 18, while 103 are pursuing a PhD in the part-time mode. During the AY 2018 – 19, 99 candidates enrolled with the institute as PhD students, of which 68 were male and 31 females.
Ques. Does MNNIT have hostel facilities for PhD scholars?
Ans. Being a fully residential institute, MNNIT has campus accommodation facilities for male and female students studying across graduation, post-graduation, and doctoral levels. There are eight boys’ hostels and two for girls on campus apart from an International House for PhD and PG students. PhD students need to pay INR 20000 at the time of admission towards Hostel fees.
Ques. What amount of stipend do stipendiary PhD do students receive?
Ans. PhD students are awarded a monthly stipend of INR 25,000 as per MHRD regulations during the first 2 years of the program. Thereafter, the stipend amount may be increased to INR 28000 per month upon a satisfactory review report. This stipend/ scholarship scheme is valid for a period of 5 years.
