IIT Kharagpur Placements 2023: Highest Package: INR 2.6 CPA, Average Package, Top Recruiters

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur or IIT-KGP) is a public institution established by the government of India in 1951. It is the oldest IIT and is often called the mother of OITs. Today, it is considered an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The institute offers academic courses over a wide range of disciplines like Management, Law, Architecture, Humanities, etc.

Placements: Almost all students of the CSE branch are placed with good packages. The average salary package offered is 26 LPA to 28 LPA. The highest salary package offered is 1 crore per annum. 

IIT Kharagpur invites the best companies during the internship and placement season and the jobs offered by them spread across various sectors such as Core Engineering, IT, Finance, Consulting, Automobiles, PSUs, etc. Top recruiting companies include

Around 80% to 90% of students get internships. 

Honestly, a true coding lover needs not to worry too much about placements. They should just be good in what they do and certainly, an opportunity will come their way.

Let’s explain this through an example of a friend who was a graduate of Industrial Engineering and Management, IIT Kharagpur, and is currently in Amazon as a Software Development Engineer.

Owing to his Industrial Background, he faced backlash initially and couldn’t sit for placements in big companies like Adobe, Google, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs. He then came across a startup company - BankBazaar that visited the campus on the 2nd day of placements and also had a coding test. He passed the test with flying Colors and 

for the first offer during that placement season.

Ever since then, he started receiving calls from top companies like Amazon, Google, Walmart Labs, etc. He soon joined Amazon and worked for a few years. Recently, he got a call from Goldman Sachs HR for the Goldman Sachs, Strategic Group. This came as a surprise since this company only prefers toppers from IITs and IIMs. It was his dream job to make mathematical models and program them. Fortunately, all his interviews went pretty well and in the end, he was introduced to the Managing Director of the Finance Division, at Goldman Sachs. who conducted a discussion on the projects he would be working on. 

After experiencing almost 3 years in the Software Industry, my friend only advised coding lovers to focus solely on their passions and let the world find them.

The average packages of “Applied Geology” or any other branch apart from CS, ECE, EE, and MnC are highly misleading as they include both core and non-core jobs with non-core jobs forming the majority.

In reality, IIT campus placements offer very few core jobs in certain departments and Applied Geology Is one of them. So most of the students tend to go for Non-Core jobs related to their field of interest like Coding, Finance, Data Analysis, etc. The number of companies offering core jobs in departments such as Mechanical or Chemical is very low. So out of the entire batch, only toppers are offered core jobs while the rest go for non-core jobs. The placement percentage is a combination of both these jobs and thus cannot tell you specifically about the placements of that particular department.

On an average batch size of 25-30 students, only 4-5 get core jobs in Applied Geology while the rest get non-core jobs. So your skills and abilities matter a lot during such branch placements. The median salary of Applied Geology is around INR 15 LPA and some top recruiters include Capgemini, Cipla, Cognizant, Genpact, IBM, ICICI, Just dial, Oil India Limited, YesBank, and more.

Around 90% of students in this department get placed. However, the core job offers are very limited and most of them go for other options. Some are doing research in our department from foreign universities. Last year the median salary package offered was around 18 LPA and the highest salary package was 38 LPA. 

Top recruiters of this branch include

• Coal India

Core and non-core recruiters are TCS and Wipro which select interns from the Geology branch. Most students get placed in December itself and have some or other kind of job offers by the time college ends.

A number of students were awarded research fellowships from prestigious institutions like the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, the DST-INSPIRE, etc. 

IIT Kharagpur is always open to consulting companies. However, the top consultants you mentioned don’t visit IIT Kharagpur usually because

• The recruiting in consulting companies is generally done by Partner level executives. These are extremely busy people who are paid hefty amounts for just one hour of counseling. 
• The consultants you mentioned have a small demand which is fulfilled by IIT Delhi or IIT Bombay wherever the main office is.
• Traveling to IIT Kharagpur requires 2-3 days and consultants are not that free
• The profile which goes to some of the local colleges may not be the same which comes to IITs.

But if you look from a positive aspect, although IIT Kharagpur was not visited by top consulting companies, it had more than 130 offers, which is the highest among IITs and packages offered, but at par with other IITs. 

Around 90% of placements are offered at IIT Kharagpur. The highest salary package offered is INR 2 CPA and the average salary package is 16 LPA. 

Placements are decent and better than many colleges in India.

Placements largely depend on the academic performance of the student, interview, aptitude test, and other non-academic accomplishments. Therefore placements for Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture cannot be objectively described. 

According to the recent placement reports at IIT Kharagpur, the highest package offered was 48 LPA and the median package was 15.5 LPA. 

The top recruiting companies were Soft Shipyard, Vedam, and GRSE. 100% of students got internships in companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and Upskill. The top roles offered are Marine Engineer, Design Engineer, Navy Personnel, and Ship Manager.

Some companies offer internships opportunities for students belonging to the department of ONA(Ocean engineering and naval architecture) 

These companies additionally provide PPOs to some of the interns who performed well during their internship but honestly the PPO Percentage in the ONA department is just average.

Given your profile, you can definitely secure a good internship at IIT Kharagpur. However, getting an internship requires a lot of research and effort.

• The first step is to determine what kind of internship you are looking for. You have two options to choose from: research or industrial training.
• Once you are clear with the kind of internship you want, you can start looking for companies that do not have the CG criteria.
• Another way to look for an internship Is to contact your department seniors because then help you understand how to prepare and what materials or books to follow, how much time to invest in your preparation,etc.
• If you are adamant about working on a certain topic, you can contact the people that work on such projects and get the general idea about what every company works on.
• Start looking for programs if you are willing to go for a research internship.

Lastly, if you fail to get selected in the choice of your program or are rejected because of low CGPA, don’t let that dishearten you because you have an entire year to focus on academics and projects and still can work on your placements.

IIT Kharagpur in general does not publish complete placements anywhere. So it is kind of difficult to get accurate information, nevertheless the student media bodies of IIT Kharagpur publish these details with some limitations.

Around 95% of students are placed this year, and many top companies came for campus placements. Top companies are
