PTE Writing Essay: Syllabus, Strategies, Books and Practice Papers

PTE writing essay analyzes the candidates’ proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, spelling and written discourse skills. PTE writing falls within the same module as PTE speaking. Candidates need to complete the PTE Speaking module first and move on to the PTE writing section. There are two parts in the PTW writing essay including-

• Summarize Written Text PTE
• PTE Essay

Candidates need to write from dictation PTE for both the texts. The entire module is for a time duration of 54-67 minutes and includes around 28-36 questions.

PTE Exams 2022: Speaking and Writing

This section assesses candidates on two major skills; spoken and written. This section comprises six different segments. The overall time duration is 54-67 minutes. This component assesses your promptness on the PTE speaking and writing examinations, which you will be reading for the first time. PTE Summarize Written Text 

Summarize written text PTE is a short-answering written segment. Individual’s ability in comprehension, analysis and combining information is assessed. You are required to read a passage and summarize its key points. Length in summarize written text PTE passage will be of 300 words. Candidate is required to summarize the passage within 75 words. Candidates need to submit the response for dictation PTE summarize writing in 10 minutes. Writing summary PTE is assessed on; content, form, grammar and vocabulary. Partial credit is given to PTE summarize writing.

Strategies for Effective Writing

Abiding by strategies will help achieve a higher PTE score and ensure meeting objectives. Below mentioned are few strategies:

PTE Summarize the Text Example

Candidates should be proficient in answering questions where they are able to summarize the passage within 75 words. Below is an example of a passage question based on which candidates would appear for writing summary PTE.

PTE Essay

Candidates are required to write the essay in a PTE approved format. This will ensure appropriate and increased scoring in PTE writing essay. You will be provided with a prompt of 2-3 sentences. Based on that prompt, you are required to write an argumentative essay.This essay should have 200-300 words. The time slot for the submission of PTE essay topics is 20 minutes.

Strategies to PTE Writing Essay

• Stick to the prompt
• Incorporate planning and an organized approach
• Apply critical thinking
• Include 4 paragraphs; introduction, a body with idea, and a conclusion
• Write above 200 words but equal to 380 words

Step 1 (Analyse the Prompt and Plan): Candidates need to make sure that they analyse the prompt of the question well enough for identifying important information relevant to the PTE Essay topic. Candidates should keep a check for what the question asks them to do, for instance, agree or disagree with the statement. Additionally, plan writing your PTE essay checking the topic, understanding the key points that need to be covered and the arguments to be presented. Accordingly, the following structure can be followed: 

• Introduction- introducing the topic and relevant information 
• Paragraph 1- one idea that supports the argument 
• Paragraph 2- another supporting argument idea or a counter argument

Step 2 (Write the Essay): With the proper plan in hand, candidates can use their English writing proficiency and ability to write the essay. The essay should be clear and concise and relevant to the given topic. Furthermore, use of effective range of vocabulary and grammar would help in increasing the PTE writing score for the candidates. Step 3 (Proofread and Make Changes): After completing writing the answer, candidates should be able to check and proofread what he/she has written. How is PTE Writing Essay Scored? 

PTE Writing task requires candidates to write the essay in an argumentative manner and ensure that it includes the creative thinking abilities of the candidates. The “Content” is the most important trait and if it does not find relevance with the prompt then zero would be awarded to that answer. Similarly, candidates may score zero in the following cases: 

• The response is not in English 
• The written form is very short or very long essay 
• Candidates did not use punctuation  
• Candidates made use of bullet points or very short sentences 
• The response is written in capitals 
• There is no written response
