The core of the program is research in the field of wood sciences. A wide variety of research projects are carried out in the departments of wood biology and wood products, wood technology and wood-based materials, forest botany as well as molecular biotechnology and forest genetics. One focus is on methods of wood modification, in which the swelling and shrinkage of the wood are minimized by interfering with the cell wall of the wood and the stability against UV radiation is to be increased. However, work on biotechnological and genetic engineering issues in connection with wood and wood-destroying fungi can also be carried out.

The PhD-programme generally is tuition-free. In Germany, the universities are financed by the government. The semester fee is actually $410.52 (reduced price in case of public financing $319.16). German health insurance is obligatory for all students. This insurance covers the costs of normal medical treatment in Germany (e.g.: TK or mawista or Covomo). The monthly charge is approximately $49 to $73. Rooms are available for about $305 per month. So including food, clothing, etc., a student needs at least $1096.31 per month for the stay at Göttingen.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Applicants must hold an above-average Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, a "Diplom" or equivalent in a subject related to the topics of research: forest or wood sciences, biology, chemistry, and related fields.
- There will be a selection and probably a test for applicants (via the internet for people from abroad).
- Applicants must have at least successfully completed a Master’s, Diploma or Magister’s course, a course corresponding to this, which leads to a state examination, or an equivalent course of study at a University belonging to one of the Bologna signatory states by means of a diploma prove.
- Final exams held in a country outside of the Bologna signatory states have been passed, require the determination of the Equivalence to the qualifications, taking into account the proposals of the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) at the Permanent Secretariat Conference of the Ministers of Culture of the States in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) for the Recognition and evaluation of foreign educational qualifications
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Applicants who neither have a German university entrance qualification still have their bachelor's or master's degree or an equivalent degree at a German university must have sufficient knowledge of the German language.
