Yes, it’s possible to get admission at Thapar University, based only on board marks. For 50% of the seats, admission is through JEE Main. While for the other 50%, admission is done based on the 10+2 score.
In order to get admission based on merit, you need to score above 70% in 10+2. You also should have appeared in JEE Main, in order to be considered.
The department of civil engineering recently completed five decades of its existence. It is one of its kind in the region, which provides quality undergraduate education, excellent research environment by its Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral programs.

Everything is good from faculty to placement cell of civil engineering. Overall Thapar University is a potential choice.
Both the institutes hold their own importance and cannot be compared as both are reputed colleges and the only thing that sets them apart is the term ‘IIT’. Having known some people studying in both these institutes, I can say that IIT Ropar is much better than Thapar.
Categories | IIT Ropar |
Course Fee | 8.58 lakh |
Highest CTC | 22-25 LPA |
Average CTC | 12-16 LPA |
Recruiting Companies | Microsoft, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, etc. |
IIT Ropar beats even the other IITs in terms of infrastructure, faculty, and placements. And hence, Private Universities are no parallel to IIT Ropar.
I have a few friends who graduated from Thapar University and according to them, there is no such or major difference between COE, CAG, and CML. As well as in terms of placements and job opportunities there can be no difference found. COE includes both the software as well as the hardware aspects of a system. If you are interested in job opportunities in the gaming industry or graphics-related industry then you should definitely go for it. Your job opportunities will not be affected by your branch.
These subjects were introduced to give students options as per their interest further in COE. From the 4th semester onwards you are given the option to choose between any of the three.
One of my friends had recently joined Thapar University and here are some of the facts about it that make it stand out among others.
Categories | Thapar University |
Course Fee | 13.23 lakhs |
Highest CTC | 16 LPA |
Average CTC | 8 LPA |
Recruiting Companies | Google, JP Morgan, Amazon, Capgemini, etc. |
If you are getting your desired branch then only you should join this institute as you also have to pay a hefty amount of fees.
According to one of my friend's opinions, if you belong to the state Punjab and have completed your studies till class 12 there then you can take a chance for a counseling round.
But if not there are very less chances with a JEE Mains rank of 47,000 and it seems difficult mostly to the students belonging to the general category.
The recent cut-off has been indicated below that can give you a reference regarding the JEE Mains rank:
Year/Category | General | OBC | SC |
2020 | 426 | 106844 | 155233 |
From the above table you can clearly get an idea regarding the level of difficulty that a general candidate faces.
Work hard and score a good percentile score to get admission to one of the leading universities in the country.
My brother is a final year student at Thapar University so I think I can answer this question.
This is about the ECE department only.
Hope this helps.
It’s not true that EE is the worst branch at Thapar. Electrical Engineering at Thapar is far better than any other college in India.
The Electrical Engineering Program at Thapar University is designed to prepare its graduates for continued learning and successful careers in industry, government, academia, and consulting.
Some merits of joining Thapar University -
Here are the recent placement highlights of TU.
Highest CTC | 43 LPA |
Placement average | 90% |
Top recruiters | IBM, Wipro, Infosys, TCS |
Many of my friends are at Thapar University pursuing Electrical Engineering and I never heard any negative feedback about the program from them.
So, EE is not the worst at Thapar. However, there are possibilities that you might not find it as per your expectation but that doesn’t mean that the program is bad.
If you are getting CS at IIIT which is a 4-year course then it is the ultimate choice. IIIT Allahabad is a renowned college. However, if you are comparing other branches or courses, a quick comparison is needed for that.

IIIT A is not an IIT nor a parody of IIT it is a government college and is better than many NIT's even many new IIT's choose according to their preferences and go for it.
IIIT Delhi is clearly the best choice out of the three options especially if we are talking about CSE. Your preference order should be the following.
IIIT Delhi (Indraprastha) > Thapar University > LNMIIT Jaipur
Cutoff: (IIIT D > Thapar University)
The quality of the students also has an effect on how the college performs and also in its rankings. The cutoff for CSE at IIIT Delhi is around 200-225+. Thapar University admits students with JEE Mains marks more than 170 for students’ outside Punjab and 150 marks for students from Punjab. The cutoff indicates IIIT D offers a better peer group.
Placements:
Thpar has a great coding culture. However, based on student crowd, placements, etc. the best option among the given choices is IIITD.
