What should I choose: IIT Roorkee metallurgy or IIT BHU materials dual degree?

AB

lives in New Delhi

You can go with IIT Roorkee Metallurgy rather than IIT BHU. The four-year course is good, and you can further pursue a master’s if you are interested in this field. Both institutes are good at providing effective study materials, but there are other benefits available if you choose IIT Roorkee. They are:

  • The Metallurgy department at IITR is the top in packing material research in India
  • They are best for coding culture, machine learning, software, and so on
  •  You will have a culture of interdisciplinary study, and with the presence of the Center of Excellence - Nanotechnology, which is led by a Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, you will have the added advantage of working in the best labs.

So, IIT Roorkee is much better than IIT BHU.

Which is better - NIT Durgapur Metallurgy or VIT Vellore CSE?

Sabeer Chalana Posted On : September 8th, 2023

As a CSE student at VIT Vellore, I was also faced with the same dilemma.

First of all, there is a ragging culture at NIT Durgapur. It does carry the NIT, but it lags behind the top NITs. Apart from that, Metallurgy does not offer much scope in India.

The placement figures mentioned on their website, however, are quite promising.

During the 2023 placement season, MME recorded 90.32% placements with an average package of 8.79 LPA.

Now coming to VIT Vellore, there is no ragging on campus. It offers all the top-class facilities, great environment and friendly crowd. CSE is the best branch of VIT Vellore. The college offers good placements and infrastructure.

According to me, choosing CSE at VIT Vellore is a better option.

How is IIT Hyderabad metallurgy?

SA
Shruti Agarwal Posted On : May 9th, 2023

My brother is a student in B.Tech third year at IIT Hyderabad MSME (Materials Science and Metallurgical Engg). The MSME program is a decent choice if you are ready to stay committed and invest extra efforts to secure a core job.

  • Courses: The courses covered under this program are not purely metallurgy based, but rather a combination of materials science such as polymers.
  • Faculty: The MSME department has many zealous professors who are highly approachable and guide you throughout. They assist undergraduates in research.
  • Double Major: For those who want to work in the IT industry, you can go for a double major in another department. This demands an extra 24 credits, which will get you two UG degrees and might help you secure a well-paying job in the industry. Additionally, minors are also offered, in most of the engineering departments, along with a minor in entrepreneurship.
  • Branch change: You can also change your branch easily from this department and many students every year go for it.

Thus, IIT Hyderabad Metallurgy is a decent choice and can be considered by engineering aspirants.

Is metallurgy department in IIT Bhubaneswar any good?

MT
Mayank Tuteja Posted On : August 13th, 2020
M.Tech Mechanical Engineering DesignIndian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (2018)

From an academic point of view, the Metallurgy department provides great opportunities, industry exposure, good placement opportunities, and so on. There are many other reasons you can find relevant to consider it.

  1. IIT Bhubaneswar has experienced professors from the respective background. There is also a good Student-Teachers ratio in the metallurgy department.
  2. IIT BBS has furnished and well-equipped labs fit for research. As Orissa is famous for minerals, you will get many chances for field trips too. This will provide you with practical experiences.
  3. During the 2019 campus placement,  90% of students from the metallurgy department got placed. The average salary package offered was around 11.4 LPA. In the past, many graduates have got a good salary package and got the chance to work abroad.

Should I go for metallurgical engineering or chemical engineering at VSSUT in Burla?

Sapna Malik updated Posted On : October 12th, 2023

Both Metallurgical Engineering and Chemical Engineering at VSSUT are relatively new. Here are a few points of difference based on some common aspects

  • Scope: As a Metallurgical student, you can work in any metal industry after graduation. Another option is pursuing higher studies like M.Tech or MS from IITs. This branch has immense scope outside India. Chemical engineers are highly sought after because every industry needs to hire chemical engineers for pollution control and waste matter management. So in terms of scope, Chemical Engineering is better
  • Academics: The metallurgical department at VSSUT has inexperienced but enthusiastic professors. Students are offered seven internship facilities from various NITs, IITs, and National Laboratories. The quality of faculty is similar in Chemical Engineering too.
  • Placements: During its year of commencement, Metallurgy passed out with around 96% placement making it the highest in core branches. Students of this branch were recruited by companies like Vedanta Resources, Hindalco, Bhushan Steel, and Adhunik Metals. Chemical Engineering is a new branch so its placements are still lacking.

In all, both branches offer decent opportunities with chemistry offering slightly better opportunities as compared to metallurgy. This is because it's open to a wider range of companies and this branch has great scope abroad.

Is it possible for an IIT Roorkee metallurgy student to change branch to mechanical?

SG
Shruti Gupta Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2020)

Yes, It certainly is possible for an IIT Roorkee metallurgy student to change his branch to Mechanical.

In fact, based on recent stats, the metallurgy branch has the highest number of students opting for a branch change around 16 students out of 36 branch changers. Yet, I would like to bring to light the fact that IIT Roorkee has a bit of a complex branch change policy in comparison to other IITs.

  • The availability of seats for branch change intake is low around 2-3 only. This also includes seats for the reserved categories.
  • The CGPA required for branch change is very high due to less availability of seats. To get a branch change into CSE, one needs around 10 CGPA, for Electrical and ECE, one needs 9.7+ while other branches require around 9.4+ CGPA.
  • Lastly, branch change in IIT Roorkee takes place right after the first semester giving you less time to excel in adjusting alongside adjusting to your new life. You don’t have a second chance to score better in the second semester to compensate for the low marks in the first.

Although branch change at IIT Roorkee might seem difficult, with the right mindset and determination one can surely get into his preferred branch.

How have the placement stats been for the metallurgical branch in MNIT Jaipur?

Namrata Das Posted On : October 10th, 2023

Instead of presenting stats, I will talk about the ground reality placements for this branch.

There are limited job opportunities in the core sector for Metallurgy students. Due to a lack of options during placement season, 9-pointers too end up in non-core sectors. Even GATE offers limited job opportunities. More than often, even 2-digit rank holders fail to get a call from PSUs.

But this branch is good for a career in research. You’ll have access to world-class facilities at labs like Material Research Center (MRC). Other than that, the Top 5 students from Metallurgy receive two-year research scholarships from the Ministry of Steel.

Maintaining a high CGPA is quite easy for B.Tech Metallurgy students of MNIT. These grades are important while applying for an MS at reputed universities.

Metallurgy from MNIT Jaipur is a good choice for future researchers. In terms of campus placements though, it's not a good choice.
