Can I get mechanical engineering at VSSUT Burla with an AIR of 1.19 lakh in the JEE Mains (I am from general category)?

AB

No, unfortunately, it’s not possible to get a seat in Mechanical Engineering at VSSUT with such a low rank. Usually, the cutoff for the general category is around 60-70k and your rank is far from the cutoff rank. However, if you are adamant about getting a mechanical seat you can opt for the branch change facility under which the top 10% of students of a branch can change their branch. For this, you need to secure a good CGPA in the semesters. But this option is very risky and unpredictable so consider all options.

What is the average package for mechanical engineering at VSSUT Burla?

SS
Savi Sharma Posted On : October 12th, 2023

Usually, mechanical engineering students in VSSUT get placed in software companies. Around 10% of students get into Core Jobs with an average package of INR 5.5-6 Lakhs and the rest 60-70% get Software Jobs with an average package of around INR 3.2-.3.5 LPA. The reason it’s the average package is not at or with NITS and IITs or colleges is because of its poor location. Nevertheless, VSSUT is known to produce talented graduates.

In 2022, BTech Mechanical Engineering students of VSSUT received 80 offers and the highest package stood at INR 7.6 LPA.

Hope this helps you.

I got NIT Rourkela for biotechnology and VSSUT for electrical. Which is the best in the sense of placement records?

SV
Sudeeksha Verma Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2020)

Both NIT Rourkela and VSSUT are at the same level in terms of placements. BioTech students from NIT Rourkela and Electrical students from VSSUT get placed in software firms like TCS/IBM. Therefore, I recommend you look beyond placements and adopt a broader perspective. Identify where your interests and passions lie and approach that path rather than running after placements.

The field of Biotechnology is growing at a fast pace with cutting-edge research taking place. Many of NIT Rourkela Biotechnology alumni are today advancing into successful careers or research paths. Some examples are

  • An alumnus is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford.
  • Another alumnus is pursuing her master's at the University of California at Berkeley.
  • A senior is currently pursuing Ph.D. at the national university of Taiwan.

The best part of Biotechnology at NIT Rourkela is the limited number of students which increases your chances of performing well in competitive exams like GATE increases.

Overall, being a part of a well-reputed institute like NIT Rourkela will offer great exposure both academically and personally. As an Electrical student at VSSUT, you will most probably be getting into a boring job at PSU. Moreover, Burla has a deteriorating infrastructure and poor campus facilities. So go for NIT Rourkela!

Why is VSSUT, Burla considered the best state government college of Odisha as opposed to CET, Bhubaneswar?

Sayantani Barman Posted On : October 11th, 2023

VSSUT might be the best govt college, but CET is equally good. The only reason VSSUT has a better reputation is because of its rich legacy. There are some other minor aspects in which VSSUT and better than CET Bhubaneswar

  1. Academics: VSSUT is a deemed university so its curriculum is well-updated and structured. The professors are much more qualified and classes and labs are held regularly. Academically, VSSUT is better than CET mainly because it follows the BPUT pattern.
  2. Extracurricular: VSSUT has a more vibrant campus life with many clubs like the Robotics Society, SAE BAJA, SAE SUPRA, Emotica- dramatics club, Coding Society, VSSUT Satellite Programme, etc All of the clubs participate in the national level competitions.
  3. Campus life: VSSUT is located in a serene location away from the hustle and bustle of any city. The campus is huge and lush green offering a peaceful ambiance.
  4. Culture: VSSUT has an amazing culture because of its rich legacy of almost 60 years

Overall, VSSUT grooms you better as a person although both colleges have a long way to go before they can be even called good institutions by Indian standards.

How is the girls hostel at VSSUT Burla?

Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : October 11th, 2023

VSSUT Burla has 3 girls' hostels, each with its pros and cons.

  • Anuradha H.R: This hostel is for first-year students with 4 seater rooms. Excessive sharing may give a congested experience but it is also crucial for binding between peers. This hostel has all the basic amenities one could ask for.
  • Visakha H.R: Currently it’s the hostel that accommodates 3rd year students. It’s an old hostel with not very well-maintained rooms. The best part however is the direct LAN connection for 24 hrs. This hostel also has an excellent canteen facility.
  • Arundhati H.R: This is the biggest girls' hostel of VSSUT run by the government. All the facilities are run by students including the mess and common room. This hostel accommodates final-year BTech, 1st year MTech, and MSc students. As it’s recently renovated, this hostel offers the best facilities.

All the 3 hostels are in close proximity to the college and students can stay out till 7 PM. Hope the information was useful.

Which is advisable, ceramic engineering at NIT, Rourkela or mechanical engineering at VSSUT, Burla?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 21st, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Here is a comparison between Ceramic Engineering at NIT Rourkela and Mechanical at VSSUT-

  1. Brand Name- NIT Rourkela carries the NIT tag and has a bigger brand name than VSSUT. NIT R ranks higher than VSSUT in various rankings.
  2. Placements- Placements for Mechanical at VSSUT are good. Core companies like TATA Steel, Hyundai, Vedanta, and Hindalco visit VSSUT for placements and offer good packages. However, due to high competition only around 40% ME students get into core companies. Around 40% of students from Ceramic at NIT Rourkela are placed in core companies. The number of students in Ceramic is small so the competition is less. Non-core companies also offer placements to Ceramic students in various sectors like Analytics, Trading, and Coaching. A few startups also visit for recruitment.
  3. Research Scope- NIT Rourkela has better research facilities than VSSUT. As Ceramics is related to materials, it has a lot of research scope. You can go for a foreign internship after your 3rd year or opt for an MS after your B.Tech. Getting a foreign research internship or an MS seat is easier for a NITian.
  4. Campus - The campuses of both are quite big. However, NIT Rourkela has a bigger, better, and more developed campus. The cleanliness and other facilities at NIT R hostels are better than VSSUT hostels.
  5. Fests and Other Activities- Though VSSUT has good fests, the fests of NIT R are far superior. NIT R has a great club culture. There is a club for everything at NIT R, including Robotics, Entrepreneurship, Media, Dance, Drama, Debate, Art, Music, Social Work, etc. NIT R also has a big swimming pool, two stadiums with floodlights, a Tennis court, a Basketball court, and around six gyms.

Based on these parameters, I would recommend you join Ceramics at NIT Rourkela. However, I would also suggest you talk to the alumni of both colleges before arriving at a decision.

Should I go for metallurgical engineering or chemical engineering at VSSUT in Burla?

Sapna Malik updated Posted On : October 12th, 2023

Both Metallurgical Engineering and Chemical Engineering at VSSUT are relatively new. Here are a few points of difference based on some common aspects

  • Scope: As a Metallurgical student, you can work in any metal industry after graduation. Another option is pursuing higher studies like M.Tech or MS from IITs. This branch has immense scope outside India. Chemical engineers are highly sought after because every industry needs to hire chemical engineers for pollution control and waste matter management. So in terms of scope, Chemical Engineering is better
  • Academics: The metallurgical department at VSSUT has inexperienced but enthusiastic professors. Students are offered seven internship facilities from various NITs, IITs, and National Laboratories. The quality of faculty is similar in Chemical Engineering too.
  • Placements: During its year of commencement, Metallurgy passed out with around 96% placement making it the highest in core branches. Students of this branch were recruited by companies like Vedanta Resources, Hindalco, Bhushan Steel, and Adhunik Metals. Chemical Engineering is a new branch so its placements are still lacking.

In all, both branches offer decent opportunities with chemistry offering slightly better opportunities as compared to metallurgy. This is because it's open to a wider range of companies and this branch has great scope abroad.

Is VSSUT a tier 1 university?

Sabeer Chalana Posted On : October 12th, 2023

No, VSSUT is not a tier 1 university and neither are IITs and NITs. One needs to understand the fact that the Tier-1 and Tier-2 system is relevant in the US and not in India. It is a classification based on internationally competitive research outcomes of a university. Indian universities don’t come under this category yet. In India, tier-1 means a college with excellent placements. In reality, very few of our universities fare well when their research outcome is considered. Also, India does not have any specific body to provide ranking based on international competitive research outcomes. The NIRF ranks colleges generally.

One also needs to consider the fact that India is a developing country with limited resources. The budget for research is less compared to foreign universities.

It can thereby be concluded that VSSUT University is not a tier-1 university but it is one of the best institutions in Odisha.
