What are some helpful tips for students starting their first year at NIT Durgapur?
As an alumni of NIT Durgapur, I am sharing some tips that will help you in your college life-
- Maintain a good attendance record. Maintain at least 75% attendance. A low attendance can cost you a year.
- Don’t register yourself in the bad books of faculty members. Some professors get vengeful and they won’t soften however much you plead.
- Maintain as good a CGPA as possible.
- Choose your friends wisely. Keep yourself surrounded by positive and motivated people.
- Join student organizations. Volunteer in the organizing committee of college fests.
- Study during your 2nd and 3rd year semester breaks. This will really help you in your professional life.
- RECSTACY is the annual cultural fest of NIT Durgapur. Do attend it.
These are some tips that will make your life in NIT Durgapur easier. Enjoy your four years in this college and make lifelong memories.
What is the highest and average package offered in ECE at NIT Durgapur?
The reality about ECE placements at NIT Durgapur is that the ECE core sector companies rarely visit for placements and most packages are offered by IT sector companies. A few core companies that have visited in the past are CDOT, Sankalp Semiconductors, Idea Cellular & Reliance Jio. Recently big shots like Qualcomm, TI, and NXP have started visiting the campus for recruitment.
As for the stats, the institute does not release the highest package. Here is what is released officially

What is the placement scenario of NIT Durgapur?
As per the 2023 placement data released by NIT Durgapur,187 companies visited the campus. The placement percentage stood at 84.66%. 746 offers were given to the students in total. The highest CTC was recorded at INR 70 LPA and the average CTC stood at INR 13.62 LPA.
4% students were offered <5 LPA, 46% were offered 5-10 LPA, 24% were offered 10-15 LPA, and 26% were offered >15 LPA.

Should I choose mechanical at Thapar University or metallurgy at NIT, Jamshedpur and Durgapur?
Both Mechanical from Thapar University and Metallurgy at NIT Durgapur are great options. However, if you want to attach a NIT tag to your degree, then NIT Durgapur is a great option.
The Metallurgy and Material Science branch at NIT Jamshedpur has a decent faculty pool with a mix of good and bad professors. Additionally, companies like Tata Steel, JCAPCPL, and many more visit during placements.

What is the fee structure at NIT Durgapur?
I have mentioned below the B.Tech fee structure for AY 2023-24 at NIT Durgapur.
The semester tuition fee for B.Tech and DD courses is as per MHRD regulations. That is Rs. 62,500 for students of every semester. If you belong to SC/ST/PH/have family income less than 1 LPA, your tuition fee will be 100% waived. If your family income is between 1-5 LPA, your tuition fee will be 2/3rd waived. The tuition fee has been constant for many years.
The hostel fee will vary from one hostel to another, and one month to another. You’ll have to pay a refundable security deposit of 5000 INR at the time of joining the hostel. 6200 INR will be paid as hostel seat rent and hostel establishment charge by students of every semester. Mess charges will be added as applicable.
NIT Durgapur is one of the most affordable NITs. In spite of this, it has good mess food.
What should I choose. 1. CSE Jadavpur University 2. B.Tech + M.Tech dual degree CSE @ IIEST, Shibpur 3. CSE @ NIT Durgapur?
First of all, never compare Jadavpur University with NIT Durgapur for the Engineering stream. Second important thing is, people usually prefer B.Tech and M.Tech students over the one who has opted for Dual degree program. The reason for this is dual degree programs are not valuable in industry or research.
Talking particularly about CSE, Jadavpur University is quite good and even better than the new IITs and most of the NITs. Among the given options, CSE at Jadavpur University is the best option to opt for. You will enjoy your studies here. You will have a good range of research projects. You will get abundant internship opportunities from here. Although placements at JU are not as great as compared to IITs, NITs, BITS, and IIITs.
I am getting mining in NIT Surathkal. Should I take these risks or shall I join NIT Durgapur civil or chemical, NIT Calicut civil?
Your choice can be based either on the branch or on college.
NIT Surathkal is a better choice than NIT Calicut and NIT Durgapur. As far as placements are concerned, they aren’t any better for Civil or Chemical either. It is always more beneficial to go for branches like ECE, CSE, IT and EEE from a placement point of view.

What is the one thing you will miss when you graduate from NIT, Durgapur?
My sister is a recent pass-out of NIT Durgapur and misses it a lot. She misses everything about her college from the amazing hostel life to all the friends she made. She misses the memorable and enjoyable moments spent with seniors. with them. She wants to relive all the fun moments like late-night gossip and fun in the hostel and bunking classes with her friends.
She misses the struggle she went through to maintain her attendance and a good CGPA. Another amazing experience is when NIRVANA is held. A number of workshops are held by clubs to help students pursue their passions. She found happiness in gossiping and eating junk food in places of recreation inside the campus. She also misses visiting restaurants like Mainland China, Lemon Grass, City Residency, Layeks, Durgapur House, and many others. The competitions conducted by clubs and fests are also very engaging.
With so many memories and life lessons, she thanks NIT Durgapur for what it made her today.
How is the NIT Durgapur IT department (placements, infrastructure, internship facility and faculty wise)?
Here are some details about the CSE department of NIT Durgapur-
- Placements- NIT Durgapur has a good placement record, especially for its CSE department. Any decent student can get a job during placements. The average CTC offered for CSE was 21.45 LPA while the placement percentage stood at 85.71%.
- Infrastructure- NIT Durgapur has a decent infrastructure, not at par with top NITs and IITs. However, developments are constantly taking place on campus.
- Internship facility- There aren’t many on-campus internship offers for the students of NIT Durgapur. But you may get a chance at brands like Microsoft, DE Shaw, etc. Off-campus, the NIT tag will surely help you secure a good internship. Startups seek IIT and NIT students for internships/jobs.
- Faculty- The CSE faculty is well qualified.
- Environment- The crowd at NIT Durgapur is great. You’ll learn a lot from your peers.
Hence, you should go for the CSE department of NIT Durgapur. It's good in every aspect. (B.Tech IT has been discontinued since July 2023).
