Which course is better for a B.Tech fresher in mechanical: PGDIE or PGDIM at NITIE?

RK
Rubani Kaur Posted On : August 16th, 2021
MBA from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2018)

Both PGDIE and PGDIM are very good courses for a mechanical engineer, but the syllabus for both these courses is different.

PGDIE

  1. It is a flagship course of NITIE which is more focused on industrial engineering. To get admission to this course, you have to clear the GATE exam.
  2. As a fresher, you can make up with most of the students in your branch but you might not be able to contribute as much as the students who have significant experience, especially in class discussions and group activities.
  3. But there won't be many problems during placements as there are many companies who are looking for fresh candidates to join their team, especially in the FMCG sector.

PGDIM

  1. It is a management course that is equivalent to an MBA course, and to get admission in this course, you have to clear the CAT exam.
  2. As a fresher, if you take admission in this course, you would probably be in the minority as most of the students would have some kind of work experience.
  3. There will be certain projects which would need some kind of experience and here your other batch mates can be a step ahead of you.
  4. You will have to do a lot of reading and communicating with all your batch mates, professors to learn how a business works.

Both the courses are very different from each other and now it depends on you in which field you are interested in. If you want to pursue a management course then go for PGDIM or if you want to be in the field of engineering, then you can choose PGDIE.

What are my chances of getting into NITIE PGDIE?

AG
Ashmita Goel Posted On : August 13th, 2021
PGDPM from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2018)

My brother used to be a student of NITIE Mumbai, so I think I can give you some information regarding their admission process.

  • First, you need to crack the GATE cut-offs for admission. As per the past year, the required GATE cutoff ranges between 650-700. However, the cut-offs are uncertain as it depends upon the number of applicants.
  • Once shortlisted, you will have to appear for the GD-PI process. The Personal Interview is on a profile basis. You have to do well in PI, in order to get selected.
  • After the above round, a final merit list is prepared based on composite scores in GATE, GD-PI, relevant work experience, and academics. The academics also have a significant weightage which usually remains undisclosed.

Hope this gives you the overall idea about admission at NITIE.

How is the PGDIE (post graduate diploma in industrial engineering) from NITIE? What are the marks needed on the GATE?

AK
Ashmita Khanal Posted On : August 16th, 2021
Studied PGDIE & PGDMM at National Institute of Industrial Engineering

NITIE resealed the 2021 GATE cutoff for PGDMM and PGDPM. Which is as follows.

Category  GATE Cutoff
General  609
OBC  473
SC 345
ST  317
Physically Disabled  473

Even if the admission to the PGDIE course is done through GATE, the course is considered as any other management course in the industry and at par with the Tier one b-schools in India. I would suggest you to go college if you are looking for a generalist management course.

By management, I do not mean managing a team intrinsically. You can always go for individual roles if you possess the right set of skills. These include formulating strategy as a consultant, working on big data/analytics, managing supply chain, or working as a product manager for e-commerce companies, etc.

Significant numbers of students are hired from NITIE by the big companies. This increase in the hiring also caused an increase in the salaries offered and diversification in the roles offered.

Should I join NITIE in their PGDIE program or wait for PSU?

Neha Kansal Posted On : August 18th, 2021
PGDIE from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2019)

If you want to pursue a higher degree that too in MBA then go for NITIE. If you have got a call or if you are inclined towards doing a job you can opt for that. It depends completely upon your decision.

I would like to share one of my friend’s experiences, who was in a same dilemma of choosing between one, but ultimately he chose to join NITIE PGDIE.

  • After he joined, he got an offer letter from IOCL as well but he chose to stay at NITIE.
  • The only factors that matter here are time and money.
  • If you want to go for PSUs and would leave this course in the middle or if either of the calls gets converted, then, you would have to compromise the whole year as well as the fee submitted for it.
  • But if you are financially strong, you can consider NITIE as a backup.
  • A lot of people change their minds as my friend did after coming to NITIE. It’s a different life here.

So, in case you don’t make it to the PSUs, then you must know that you can definitely join NITIE which would be completely worth it.

What are the ways I can fund PGDIE course in NITIE through the GATE? Is there any chance for the GATE toppers to get into this institute with a good amount of scholarship?

HK

You will become eligible to avail of the monthly stipend of Rs. 12,400 which is provided by the MHRD once you qualify for the GATE exam. Other fee-waiver programs at NITIE will help in significantly reducing the amount of fee that you need to pay.

Also, there are scholarships that are provided to the students whose family income is less than a certain specified amount. In addition to this, as a student of NITIE, you can easily avail of an education loan.

Also, NITIE provides an opportunity for summer projects. Once you get selected for the internship, the company pays you a stipend for it.

What is the average GATE score/rank required to get into NITIE PGDIE, considering an average performance in GDPI?

YR
Yash Roy Posted On : August 12th, 2021
PGDIE from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2017)

Estimating average performance in a Group discussion or Interview round of a selection process can be a pretty difficult task until and unless the interviewer has told you, you are selected. It does happen to many people.

Based on the reviews of my friends at the institute, I will say that a score of 750 in the GATE examinations for the stream of Mechanical Engineering, with around 80% in past academics ( 10th, 12th, and graduation percentages) and a good Group discussion and Personal Interview would be enough to secure enrollment in the PGDIE courses at NIDIE.

You can refer to the Cutoff details of the PGDIE courses at NITIE (2021) mentioned below.

Categories Cut off
General 609
OBC 473
SC 345
ST 317
Physically Disabled 473

My brother scored 709 in last year’s Gate Examination and was eligible for admission into the PGDIE courses at NITIE.

Can I get into the PGDIE course of NITIE if I have a 52.2% in my 12th and 8.2 CGPA in my BE mechanical?

AB
Aritra Banerjee Posted On : March 31st, 2022
PGDIE from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2017)

As your 12th percentage is below 60%, you will face difficulty in getting a shortlist. NITIE selection criteria assign certain weightage to 10th and 12th scores. So, even if you get shortlisted for the GD/PI round, your 12th percentage will bring down your overall score. A person with similar GD-PI performance and a higher 12th percentage is more likely to get preference for admission.

During the Summer internship shortlist, most recruiters usually give weightage to the 12th score. There are recruiters who don’t assign weightage to 10th and 12th scores but these are fewer in number.
