Which is advisable, ceramic engineering at NIT, Rourkela or mechanical engineering at VSSUT, Burla?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 21st, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Here is a comparison between Ceramic Engineering at NIT Rourkela and Mechanical at VSSUT-

  1. Brand Name- NIT Rourkela carries the NIT tag and has a bigger brand name than VSSUT. NIT R ranks higher than VSSUT in various rankings.
  2. Placements- Placements for Mechanical at VSSUT are good. Core companies like TATA Steel, Hyundai, Vedanta, and Hindalco visit VSSUT for placements and offer good packages. However, due to high competition only around 40% ME students get into core companies. Around 40% of students from Ceramic at NIT Rourkela are placed in core companies. The number of students in Ceramic is small so the competition is less. Non-core companies also offer placements to Ceramic students in various sectors like Analytics, Trading, and Coaching. A few startups also visit for recruitment.
  3. Research Scope- NIT Rourkela has better research facilities than VSSUT. As Ceramics is related to materials, it has a lot of research scope. You can go for a foreign internship after your 3rd year or opt for an MS after your B.Tech. Getting a foreign research internship or an MS seat is easier for a NITian.
  4. Campus - The campuses of both are quite big. However, NIT Rourkela has a bigger, better, and more developed campus. The cleanliness and other facilities at NIT R hostels are better than VSSUT hostels.
  5. Fests and Other Activities- Though VSSUT has good fests, the fests of NIT R are far superior. NIT R has a great club culture. There is a club for everything at NIT R, including Robotics, Entrepreneurship, Media, Dance, Drama, Debate, Art, Music, Social Work, etc. NIT R also has a big swimming pool, two stadiums with floodlights, a Tennis court, a Basketball court, and around six gyms.

Based on these parameters, I would recommend you join Ceramics at NIT Rourkela. However, I would also suggest you talk to the alumni of both colleges before arriving at a decision.

Which one would be better for Mechanical Engineering: NIT Surathkal or BITS Hyderabad campus?

AG
Aikantika Ghosh Posted On : September 20th, 2020
Studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (2017)

Both the colleges mentioned here are one of the most reputed colleges in the country and have excellent academic as well as placement records available. BITS Hyderabad offers a BE and NIT Surathkal offers a BTech program in mechanical engineering.

Admission- BITS Hyderabad conducts their own entrance exam called BITSAT while NIT Surathkal admits through JEE Main only for the BTech Mechanical Engineering program. The total fees for BITS Hyderabad and NIT Surathkal are 16.73 LPA and 5.39 LPA.

The closing cut off for Mechanical Engineering at these institutes are as follows.

  • BITS Hyderabad – 275 in BITSAT

  • NIT Surathkal – 8483 in JEE Main

Placement-

BITS Hyderabad- has been quite consistent in their placement statistics, also as the University is attached to Birla Institutes, the industrial exposure is very practical. The highest package received this year is 39.5 LPA and the average package was of 11 LPA.

NIT Surathkal – The placement rate of NIT Surathkal is very impressive. The highest package bagged by the students this year is 39 LPA and the average package was around 14.15 LPA. The top recruiters are Hero, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Citi Bank, Deutsche Bank.

Some of the key points of these colleges are given below.

BITS Hyderabad:

  • The institute focuses on practical knowledge and updates its curriculum from time to time to make the best out of it.

  • Presently, BITS Hyderabad is having an expansion phase and plans to add a built-up area of almost 50% of the present area.

  • Furthermore, it already has 65 research projects that are ongoing in the campus, most of which are supported by the prominent funding agencies from across India and abroad.

NIT Surathkal:

  • It is an Institute of National Importance. Situated in Mangalore, this institution offers numerous PG and UG programs in various fields of science, engineering, and management.

  • It consists of 11 support centers and 14 academic departments.

  • NITK Surathkal was previously ranked 6th amongst the country's top engineering colleges by Outlook India, 16th by India Today, and 14th by The Week.

So coming to the question if the intention is to explore college life at fullest without having any financial constraints and want a good industrial exposure then BITS Hyderabad would be a better option. On the other hand, if one wants a campus that has an equal reputation and almost a quarter in fee structure then NIT Surathkal would be the better option.

Which branch should I take in NIT Silchar mechanical or ECE?

MR
Moitrayi Roy Posted On : August 25th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology Silchar

In my opinion, you alone can decide the best branch for yourself and others can only guide you. If you are evaluating and comparing branches based on placements, then trust me it won’t help in the long run. Unless you are genuinely interested in the branch, you won’t be able to pursue a career in it for a long time.

Mechanical

  • If you are inclined towards stuff like automobiles, heavy machinery, or design, or want to work in a good PSU then choose Mechanical.
  • One needs to be aware of the fact that this branch is completely core-based so you will be studying only core concepts for 4 years.
  • The placements of core mechanical are quite better than ECE.
  • Students of the Mechanical branch can go for Mechanical-related jobs only and most software companies won't allow Mechanical students to sit for their placements.
  • Mechanical has more PSU placements but Mechanical has much higher and tougher competition compared to ECE.

ECE

  • If you are interested in small electronic devices, Arduino, IoT, Integrated circuits and diodes, fabrications, and chip design, or want to pursue a career in coding and programming then you should go for ECE.
  • This branch is a mix of core ECE and software/IT, i.e. ECE's major role will be played by software only during placements.
  • ECE core can be helpful if you want to pursue higher education.

So, make sure you go for the branch that intrigues you and not the one that offers better placements.

How difficult is it to change branches in NIT Patna from mechanical to CSE?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : August 29th, 2023

It certainly is difficult to change branches in NIT Patna from Mechanical to CSE. The change of branch allotted by JoSSA in NIT Patna is done after two semesters. As per the policies,

  • Students of B.Tech. or Integrated M.Sc. can change their branch to any other branch of their choice.
  • Students of B.Arch. are not allowed to change their branches because their admission was done on the basis of Paper - II of JEE (Mains), not Paper - I.
  • The total strength of a particular branch cannot exceed 110% of the original strength
  • The total strength of a particular branch cannot be dropped beyond 90%.

Basically, there can only be an increase of 10% in the strength of a particular branch.

To be eligible for branch change students have to complete the following criteria

  • The students must have completed all credits of the first two semesters in their first attempt.
  • The student must have scored a CGPA not less than 8.25 in the first year.

The criteria appear to be quite simple but the reality is changing the branch to CSE is a bit tricky and challenging. The seats usually vanish up to 9 CGPA for CSE, because the competition is tough for this particular branch.

So, opt for branch change only if you are genuinely interested in the branch you want to get into.

MR
Mayank Rathi Posted On : January 19th, 2022
B.Tech Petroleum Engineering, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Gandhinagar (2013)

According to the reviews online, pursuing Mechanical Engineering from PDPU will be a better choice than Nirma University.

  • Though Nirma is a more experienced university, it lags behind in exposure and facilities provided to the students.
  • PDPU being a newer institution satisfies all the requirements of the students, be it well equipped labs or classrooms.
  • PDPU has a well experienced faculty.
  • They provide proper industrial exposure through seminars, industrial visits, internships, etc.
Categories Nirma University PDPU
Course Fee INR 7.24 lakh INR 9.73 lakh
Placement Percentage 70% 70%
Highest CTC 12 LPA 10-12 LPA
Average CTC 5 LPA 6 LPA
Recruiting Companies L&T, Bosch, etc. Hindustan Unilever, Nayara Energy, etc.

The placements are also better at PDPU. Nirma University, though more experienced, has deteriorated a lot in recent years, therefore it is better if you go for PDPU to pursue Mechanical Engineering.

RS
Rahul Sabrawal Posted On : September 17th, 2020
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST) (2019)

Jadavpur University and IIEST Shibpur are both considered as one of the best institutes in India to pursue Engineering. Both fall under the top 50 institutes for engineering according to the NIRF ranking. Jadavpur University is considered to be a tier A university whereas Shibpur University is not that popular.

Discipline:

First of all, it is important for students to research the difference between mechanical and chemical engineering before choosing it for their career.

  • Chemical Engineering (CE) deals with the oil industry, pharmaceutical companies, biomedical studies, metals, minerals and nanotechnology.
  • Mechanical Engineering, on the other hand, includes applications in oil, pharmaceutical, metal, nanotechnology, semiconductors, automobiles and power plant equipment, etc.

Ranking:

IIEST Shibpur and Jadavpur University are both excellent colleges for education.

  • Jadavpur University is one of the top graded A-tier universities in India however, IIEST holds more brand value because of its recent popularity and placements.
  • Jadavpur University has been ranked at 12 out of 200 universities in India by NIRF ranking and the 2nd best university in Kolkata. IIEST Shibpur has been ranked at 43rd place in the same ranking.

Admission Cut-offs:

  • The average general cut-off for Mechanical Engineering at IIEST Shibpur is 11669 - 19625 rank in JEE mains.
  • Jadavpur University for chemical engineering requires 338-416 rank in JEE mains.

Placements:

  • The placements offered at Jadavpur University are better for the reason that it has a better nationwide ranking and engages in campus recruitment programs. It had recently achieved a record of 84% placements in May 2020.
  • IIEST mechanical engineering program had 71.93% placement for the year 2020. The top recruiter at JU includes Amazon, TCS, Bajaj, Microsoft, Adobe, BPCL whereas the top recruiters at IIEST include Accenture, Google, ITC, SBI, TATA etc.

The choice of University and course completely depends on the student’s interest and their JEE ranking. Both these subjects are relatively difficult to get but if the student is determined and smart at studying, nothing is unachievable.

Is it possible for an IIT Roorkee metallurgy student to change branch to mechanical?

SG
Shruti Gupta Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2020)

Yes, It certainly is possible for an IIT Roorkee metallurgy student to change his branch to Mechanical.

In fact, based on recent stats, the metallurgy branch has the highest number of students opting for a branch change around 16 students out of 36 branch changers. Yet, I would like to bring to light the fact that IIT Roorkee has a bit of a complex branch change policy in comparison to other IITs.

  • The availability of seats for branch change intake is low around 2-3 only. This also includes seats for the reserved categories.
  • The CGPA required for branch change is very high due to less availability of seats. To get a branch change into CSE, one needs around 10 CGPA, for Electrical and ECE, one needs 9.7+ while other branches require around 9.4+ CGPA.
  • Lastly, branch change in IIT Roorkee takes place right after the first semester giving you less time to excel in adjusting alongside adjusting to your new life. You don’t have a second chance to score better in the second semester to compensate for the low marks in the first.

Although branch change at IIT Roorkee might seem difficult, with the right mindset and determination one can surely get into his preferred branch.

How should I start my B.Tech first year studies of mechanical engineering in IIT Kanpur?

SM
Surela Mukherjee Posted On : April 24th, 2023

At IIT Kanpur, first-year courses are common in all departments. These are necessary courses and everyone has to complete them before graduation. You are also required to study an HSS or Humanities and Social Sciences course. 5 such courses have to be completed during your B.Tech.

  • Make sure you maintain a decent CPI of around 8+ throughout the first year.
  • Make sure your foundation concepts are strong as only then will you be able to cope with the more difficult ones in further semesters.
  • Keep your basics strong, especially in courses like MTH101 and MTH102

Don’t overdo it just focus on lectures and tutorials. Apart from this involve yourself in extracurriculars and socialize with everyone in general.
