NIT Rourkela: 8 Answered Questions

At NIT Rourkela hostel rooms, will every child be provided with a separate study table and cupboards? How many children per room can stay for the first years?

Divya DasB.Tech Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2020)

NIT Rourkela hostel rooms are decent with enough space to house 2 students. From the 3rd year, students are allotted single-occupancy rooms.

  • A typical room in an NIT Rourkela hostel has all basic amenities like a table, chair, bed, fan, and light.
  • Additionally, there is a provision of free Internet facilities and also DCC.
  • Students can spend their leisure time in the common room which has facilities like indoor games, TV, a library room, and a common mess.
  • Food served in the mess is decent which is related weekly. Once a week, the menu comprises special dishes. There is a day canteen offering juice, milk, tea, coffee, sandwich, eggs, etc
  • The midnight cravings are catered to by night canteens that provide tea, snacks, Maggi, and other stuff.
  • There are decent sports facilities like a badminton court and also a garden.

Hope this was helpful!

How is hostel life in NIT Rourkela?

Praver Katyal
Divya DasB.Tech Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2020)

One of my female friends shared her hostel life experience at NIT Rourkela. Here is a glimpse of what her hostel life looked like

  • She was allotted B block of KMS hostel, which has the biggest and most spacious rooms among all hostels of the institute.
  • The institute has a variety of eateries including 1 night canteen and 1 day canteen
  • The hostel has a number of rules and regulations, one such being the late entry rule wherein if you don’t enter the hostel by 11:00 PM, you have to enter your name in the late entry register. This cannot happen more than thrice a month else your parents will be informed.
  • Breakfast options are limited such as bread, eggs, bananas, cornflakes, milk, and tea. These items are supplementary to an additional menu
  • The lunch menu is great for non-veg lovers while the dinner is very pathetic.
  • Although washrooms are cleared daily, hygiene and cleanliness need to be improved.
  • Festivals like NITR, Garden Fest, and Hall Fest make the hostel life more vibrant and happening.
  • There is a common room with indoor sports facilities and other leisure facilities.

Overall hostel life at BIT Mesra is decent for girls with a few restrictions.

Does NIT Rourkela have good girl's hostel rooms?

Namrata Das
Sriparna BanerjeeStudied at National Institute of Technology, Rourkela

The two girls' hostels available at NIT Rourkela are C.V.Raman Hall of Residence and K.M.Shaw Hall of Residence. During your admission into NIT Rourkela, you will be allotted one of these two hostels.

C.V. Raman Hall of Residence-

  1. It has four blocks- A,B,C and D with single seater rooms. These rooms have a LAN port, two tables, and shelves where you can keep your belongings.
  2. The rooms are bright and airy with curtains.
  3. The problem is that because of the high admission rate to NIT Rourkela and the lack of rooms for so many students, two students share a single room with one bed for each.
  4. The washrooms and mirrors are clean. You will get a shoe stand near your room. The third floor has a wide and nice terrace. The corridors are spacious.
  5. The mess food varies with the caterer who provides the service at the time.
  6. Postgraduate students share rooms during the first year. In the second year, they are allotted single rooms.

Kiran Majumdar Shaw Hall of Residence-

  1. It also consists of 4 blocks. Two blocks have single seater rooms, while two have 3 seater rooms. The rooms are very spacious. You get shelves for your books and cupboards for your clothes.
  2. It is smaller than C.V. Raman Hall but has a better mess.
  3. P.G. students get a 3 seater room during their first year and a single seater in their second year.

The girls hostels at NIT Rourkela are not the best, however, they are quite decent. The best part is that you will enjoy your time over there and make endless memories.

How are the facilities in hostels at NIT Rourkela?

Sriparna BanerjeeStudied at National Institute of Technology, Rourkela

NIT Rourkela has amazing accommodation facilities with a few disadvantages too.

Pros

  • NIT Rourkela students are provided with a LAN port per room that operates from 5:30 pm to 8 am and the entire day on weekends.
  • There are paid laundry services. Although I will recommend washing the expensive pieces of clothing yourself.
  • Students are allotted double rooms for 3 years and single rooms in the final year.
  • The campus has a night canteen that operates till 1 am. There is also a day canteen too that runs from 10 am to 7 pm.
  • The hostels have enough sports facilities like volleyball or badminton.
  • Students are also provided DC++ for downloading stuff.
  • The hostels even have a garden and cycle stand to park your cycles.

Cons

  • The food served in the mess is not really good, especially on weekdays.
  • Rourkela experiences an extreme climate during summer so you will have to make arrangements for cooling.
  • Students are prohibited from bringing two-wheelers on campus.

So NIT Rourkela hostel facilities have more pros than cons.

Which is the best hostel at NIT Rourkela?

Ashish KumarB.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2019)

There is no ‘best’ hostel because every student considers his own hostel better than others because it's the place he spent the best years of his life and gave him precious memories. Also, NIT Rourkela does not have hostels but Halls of Residence. That being said, my sister, an ex-student of NIT Rourkela considered her hall, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw Hall of Residence the best hall in NIT Rourkela.

  • This hall is closest to the entrance and is surrounded by lush greenery.
  • The hall serves the best food on campus. Mostly students of other halls complain about the quality of food served but here students enjoy their dinner time the most.
  • This hall is the most maintained and furnished hall on the campus because of limited borders.
  • The hall is the smallest and therefore it's easy to maintain its beauty. You will find a variety of flowers and plants in its garden.
  • The boarders of this hall are from diverse courses and departments. This ensures a versatile hostel life. the seniors are there to guide the juniors all the time.
  • KMS has the most spacious rooms of all the halls on campus.
  • The hall is the perfect place to escape to during extremely hot climates. The tall trees at Central Avenue are a perfect shade.
  • The hall is in close proximity to various departments like EC, EE, CS, etc.

Overall, KMS is the best hall of residence in NIT Rourkela that offers a peaceful and serene experience.
